I don't think the fight was ever real but a devised scam to provide cover for getting Maidana tied up while Khan gets to keep the title and pick who Golden Boy wants. It just seems too odd that Marquez only started airing his misgivings after the Maidana contract was signed then pulled out. I have a thread on it.

Slightly, because Khan is a very beatable opponent for Marquez. He would have made some good money, and had the chance to be the first Mexican to win titles in four weight divisions. Hatton is definitely the easier option for Marquez. While Khan does have a chin problem, he is capable of giving Marquez a very rough night, something I'm not sure Ricky can do. He is bigger, faster, stronger, and harder to hit under Freddy Roach.

Hatton = An easier, bigger paid fight.

Khan = A potentially difficult, well paid fight.

In my opinion, if Marquez fights Hatton he has taken the easy option. However if he fights Bradley or Valero, I take all that back.

Anyway, I can't blame Marquez for not fighting Khan. He can make better money elsewhere and deserves it after a long career. Plus Khan side stepped Maidana so I can't be too critical. But Hatton is done at the top level, and a win over him would mean little compared to a win over Khan at this stage in his career.

Your looking too deeply into it. Marquez probably realised that Khan is a much harder fight than Hatton or Katsidis. If only going by the size difference.

If Marquez wanted the fight with Khan, it would have been signed pretty quickly. It stalled for so long, because Marquez was probably weighing up his options and decided he didn't want to be a potential stepping stone to a young contender.

It is the timing that does not fit. Marquez would have looked into the fight and made his mind up fairly quickly. Golden Boy has both fighters on the books if the deal was on they would have tied it up quickly. Also Marquez was in negotiations with Hatton for a fight and the Khan fight would finish that deal off and would cause damage to the Hatton business relationship. It just does not add up.
