    G. Leon's Top 20 P4P List

    1. BERNARD HOPKINS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With one perfectly placed shot to the liver, Bernard Hopkins, the ageless wonder put a stamp on his pound for pound supremacy. "The Executioner" has owned the middleweight division for nearly a decade. Hasn't lost in over eleven years when he dropped a decision to the great Roy Jones Jr. With De La Hoya behind him, Hopkins has a world of options in what has once again become one of boxing's richest divisions. Next: Someone will be "Unlucky #20" Eastman seems likely. Interesting Fact: Oscar De La Hoya became the second fighter in over ten years to actually win more than three rounds on an official scorecard against Bernard Hopkins. In 2000 judge Harry Davis gave Syd Vanderpool four rounds.

    2. KOSTYA TSZYU

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Until proven otherwise in the ring, I will now refer to Kostya as Tszyuperman. Dominant performance over Sharmba Mitchell after two year lay-off left many boxing writers including myself with more than our fair share of crow to eat. Tszyu is looking to build off the huge win with another major fight. Diego Corrales appears to be the front runner but a step up in weight to face undisputed welterweight champion Cory Spinks is not out of the question. Appears to be far too strong for anyone at junior welterweight to overcome. Next: TBD Diego Corrales in discussion

    3. ANTONIO TARVER

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Magic Man" exploded on to most peoples pound for pound list after his stunning second round knockout of Roy Jones Jr.-Tarver was in my top ten after his November 2003 encounter with Jones- His style will create problems for anyone. A tall defensive minded southpaw with one punch knockout power, is tough to beat. Next: HBO World Championship Boxing December 18 Vs. Glen Johnson Interesting Fact: The only active fighter in boxing with more than one loss that's beaten every man he's faced. And, both of Tarver's redemption wins came via KO in less than 6.

    4. FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The best young fighter in the world today has already taken the top spot on several pound for pound lists, and although his resume is impressive, his last few opponents haven't been top notch (Corley, N'Dou, Sosa) and that's hindered his ascension to my top spot. Update: After learning of the list of potential Mayweather opponents (Lovemore N'dou, Steve Johnston, Bruseles, Abdullaev) Mayweather gets dropped. He's waiting for a big payday with Gatti that never happens. Would've been nice if he could've faced someone on the level of Vivian Harris, I understand he wants to protect his #1 ranking in the WBC, I just wonder if Gatti, who would then be Mayweather's FIFTH consecutive B level opponent if all the waiting pays off, vacates before he fights him. Before three relatively easy wins, many believe Mayweather split his two fights with current WBC lightweight champ, Jose Luis Castillo. If Gatti chickens out of his mandatory obligation it should be interesting to see where boxing's "Pretty Boy" goes. Next: Another Easy Fight Interesting Fact: After losing to Floyd Mayweather, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales have all gone on to win world titles.

    5. CORY SPINKS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After three tough fights in a row Spinks tuned up nicely against the overmatched Miguel Angel Gonzalez. Spinks deserves credit for making easy work out of somebody everyone and their mama was telling him was going to be 'easy work.' Would be a strong choice for 2004 Fighter of The Year had he only fought Mayorga three weeks later. In one years time Spinks won the IBF title against Piccirllo in ITALY, came in a huge underdog against-then pound for pounder-Ricardo Mayorga, put on a boxing clinic en route to upsetting the Nicaraguan slugger to unify the welterweight titles. He then successfully defended the undisputed welterweight championship against the favored two time junior welterweight champ Zab Judah. Could be the slickest boxer in the world. NEXT: With Tszyu-Corrales in discussion, Spinks-Judah II seems likely, But Spinks is very serious about trying to make something happen with Felix Trinidad at middleweight! Interesting Fact: The dance you've seen Cory Spinks perform during his walks to the ring against Mayorga and Judah is known as the chickenhead.

    6. MANNY PACQUIAO

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After beating Barrera like he stole something, Pacquiao came right back to face Juan Manuel Marquez in this year's (so far) fight of the year. Although the judges scored it a draw, I gave the nod to Pacquiao. Very one dimensional fighter, but he's absolutely relentless in the squared circle and his pressure has already proven to be a bit too much for even the world's best to handle. NEXT: TBD

    7. WINKY WRIGHT

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Had a much tougher time with Mosley as many, including myself expected. Wright defnitely proved he's no one hit wonder, now he needs to prove he can beat another elite fighter other than Shane Mosley. And believe me Wright's out to prove it. His hit-list is as follows, Trinidad, De La Hoya, Hopkins, PERIOD. After over 50 fights he's not interested in taking any tune-ups, he doesn't seemed to dedicated to meeting any mandatory. Next: Winky is crossing his fingers and saying his prayers that his next fight is Felix Trinidad. If Tito's not next, I wonder if De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions will try to sign him also? Interesting Fact: Winky Wright heads his own record label.

    8. DIEGO CORRALES

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With his back to back wins over Joel Casamayor and Acelino Freitas, Diego Corrales has earned his right to be mentioned among the ten best in the world. Nuff said. Ever the competitor, Diego is hoping his next fight is another biggie. Fight with Jose Luis Castillo never came to fruition because Showtime didn't want to ante up and reward Corrales for his two big wins. Corrales and his manager James Prince have both indicated to **********.com that a potential showdown with undisputed junior welterweight king Kostya Tszyu has been discussed. NEXT: Possible move up to face Kostya Tszyu Interesting Fact: Diego Corrales currently has 15 tats on his body.

    9. MARCO ANTONIO BARRERA

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wasn't convinced after his TKO over the smaller Paulie Ayala, but moving up to 130 and beating the snot out of Erik Morales for the majority (I gave Barrera eight rounds) of the evening shuts me up. With Morales out of the way, obviously everyone is going to want to see if he has what it takes to turn the tables on Manny Pacquiao, who gave Barrera a terrible beating last year. NEXT: A well deserved rest

    10. RAFAEL MARQUEZ

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The best fighter in his family, and when Juan Manuel Marquez is your brother, that's saying something. Huge wins over Mark Johnson and Tim Austin and dominating performances since then make Marquez the best fighter in the world under featherweight. Hopefully a move up to 122 is in his near future because we don't need to see him fight Mauricio Pastrana and Heriberto Ruiz anymore. Who wouldn't love to see him matched against either Oscar Larios or Joan Guzman at 122 pounds? Each of those bouts would be considered potential fights of the year. NEXT: Hopefully a move up in weight

    11. ERIK MORALES

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder if I'll still receive any emails telling me I'm nuts for not having Morales MUCH higher than 7, where he stood until last Saturday night. Don't feel "Terrible", I told ya so, so I hope the crow tastes delicious. Marco Antonio Barrera, one year removed from the terrible beating he received from Manny Pacquiao, still had enough left to clearly rough Morales up in their rubbermatch. Jesus Chavez would have beaten him with two good hands, and Hernandez was never a world beater. In short, I was never as high on Morales as some of my peers in the press. Next: A well deserved rest

    12. JAMES TONEY

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2003's Fighter Of The Year is back. Toney dismantled Rydell Booker for every round in his first fight back after an eleven month hiatus due to an achilles injury. Toney planned to stay extremely busy and had a December 18 HBO on the table for him, unfortunately a torn bicep has now side lined Toney. He is expected to miss at least three months. Where this leaves his potential super fight with WBC heavyweight champ Vitali Klitschko remains unknown. Has the skills, and chin to take out any of the top heavyweights. Interesting Fact: James Toney played Joe Frazier in ALI. NEXT: TBA.

    13. JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boring was the word most often used to describe his last fight against Orlando Salido. Juan Manuel Marquez is one of the most technically sound fighters in the game, but it would be nice to see him forget about counterpunching every once in a blue moon. Needs the rematch with Pacquiao a lot more than Pacquiao does. Next: Feb. rematch with Pacquiao a possibility, but with Barrera's big win over Morales, Pacquiao-Barrera II seems like a possibility.

    14. FELIX "TITO" TRINIDAD

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He's BAAACK. After a two and a half year layoff Puerto Rican Superstar Felix "Tito" Trinidad returned to the ring with a stellar performance against heavy handed Nicaraguan slugger Ricardo Mayorga. Trinidad's championship heart and skill were on display as he consistently beat the cherry headed bomber to the punch sll night long. Trinidad takes Mayorga's spot on the list and is one more solid win away from returning to the top ten. Hopkins, De La Hoya, Wright, Mosley, Vargas, Taylor, Spinks...For Trinidad, the options are limitless. De La Hoya seems to be the early frontrunner because he's the the biggest payday, but pride and ego could prevent it from coming to fruition. NEXT: TBD

    15. GLEN JOHNSON

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His victory over Roy Jones Jr. places Johnson on my pound for pound list for the first time in his life. Not too many predicted Jones would be done coming into the ring. To his credit Johnson left no doubt and thoroughly dominated the action against the recently knocked out, but still heavily favored Jones, who was picked to win by virtually every boxing expert in the game. Johnson has always been a solid fighter. Of his nine losses maybe three of them tops were legit. Notable recent wins over Harding, Woods and now Jones. Was jobbed against Julio Gonzalez and Sven Ottke, Branco and others. Do your homework and you'll know the deal. If Jones people had even the slightest idea that Jones was done they would have never approved someone as hungry as Glen Johnson for their comeback fight. Next: HBO World Championship Boxing Vs. Antonio Tarver on Dec. 18. Interesting Fact: Now Daniel Judah can say (though he won't brag about it) he has a draw with someone who was good enough to KO Roy Jones Jr.

    16. JOEL CASAMAYOR

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fights Jose Luis Castillo on December 4 in a must win fight for the Cuban defector. Most like the bigger and stronger Castillo to outmuscle Casamayor, I think Casamayor's science ans southpaw stance will prevail. Shoot, they'd better if he wants to keep his position on this list. Castillo will get this spot if he successfully defends the vacant won agaisnt Juan Lazcano on June 5. NEXT: Dec. 4 Jose Luis Castillo On Showtime.

    17. CHRIS BYRD

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After two below average performance against Fres Oquendo and Andrew Golota, performances in which most feel Chris was fortunate to escpae with his title, Byrd showed championship heart and will by rising from the canvas to school Jameel McCline, who outweighed Byrd by 56 pounds! Byrd is usually at a five division disadvantage every time he steps in the ring. We're talking pound for pound, and at 200-220 pounds no one even comes close to Byrd. Next: With his mandatory out of the way Byrd wants to unify the division. Now that Don King has to pay Byrd his $2.5M minimum purse, Chris may finally get his wish.

    18. KASSIM OUMA

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doesn't have the name recognition of many of the others on my list, but if you know boxing all you have to do is take one quick look at Ouma's resume. Only 22 fights but he already has wins over Bunema an undefeated Toygonbayev, Lerma, Borjorquez, Candelo, Hernandez and Vernon Phillips twice. Ouma cracks the top 20 with his recent win over Phillips. Could be the best kept secret in boxing, needs a big name fight to take his career to the next level. The only 154 pounder in the world who has a chance to dethrone Winky Wright. NEXT: Fight With Kofi Jantuah in dicsussion, nothing solid though.

    19. VERNON FORREST

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the mountaintop to the valley. Two terrific wins over Mosley led to Forrest being named Fighter Of The Year 2002, but 2003 was a lost year for "The Viper" as he took two losses to Ricardo Mayorga. 2004 is another lost year as Forrest has been forced to sit due to injury, and now he's expected to miss the first half of 2005 because he needs to get the same surgery that was supposed to bring him back in December. If the second surgery is a success and he's able to return at 100%, Forrest is definitely one of the world's best, so look for him to make some noise. NEXT: TBD Interesting Fact: Vernon will be appearing in an upcoming motion picture Tournament Of Dreams and has taken acting lessons while in California.

    20. ROY JONES JR.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jones was removed from my top twenty because after his loss to Glen Johnson, I felt he should hang them up. He has decided to hang them up, but only for a short while...Jones will be back, and a couple of recent conversations with the former pound for pound king, I've decided to sneak him back in at #20. Unless my sources defy me, he didn't even train hard at all for the Glen Johnson fight, he probably spent too much time in the studio working on his Body Head ****erz CD, and as Johnson taught Jones, he's not someone to take lightly. Told **********.com that he would face the winner of the Tarver-Johnson "E-meddiately" if they showed interest in fighting him. Jones would also continue a return at heavyweight. Next: Some time off

    THE NEXT FIVE

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shane Mosley, Ricardo Mayorga, Jose Luis Castillo, Oscar Larios, and Oscar De La Hoya (in no particular order)

10 WITH P4P POTENTIAL TO KEEP AN EYE ON

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miguel Cotto, Zab Judah, Jermain Taylor, Kermit Cintron, Antonio Margarito, Vivian Harris, Joan Guzman, Travis Simms, Wayne Braithwaite, Joe "I need to fight somebody" Calzaghe (in no particular order)

    FABULOUS FIVE BIGGEST PUNCHERS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Diego Corrales, Rafael Marquez and Kostya Tszyu (in no particular order)

    SLICKEST BOXER

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(tie) Floyd Mayweather Jr., Cory Spinks Honorable Mention: Ivan Calderon

HEIR TO THE POUND FOR POUND THRONE FIGHT

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I still don't believe how Antonio Tarver and Kostya can be rated over Mayweather. Kostya has one big win back, which wasn't even that big, and Antonio Tarver has one big career win..

Excuse me if I am not in awe of Greg Leon's opinions.
He was a pretty good poster at boxing.com several years ago. Nothing more, nothing less. His lists carry no more weight for me than anybody elses.
