James Toney Tests Positive For Steroids, What This Means For Boxing

According to well known boxing writer Wallace Matthews, it was confirmed by the New York State Athletic Commission that James Toney has tested postive for anabolic steroids following his history making win over WBA champion John Ruiz. Apparently, James Toney tested positive for nandrolone (also known commercially as Deca-Durabolin). Nandrolone is a muscle-building chemical which occurs naturally in the human body, in tiny quan****** and helps increase muscle mass. Nandrolone has become popular with athletes because is doesn't carry some of the less desirable side-effects such as increased body hair or aggressive behavior.

It should be noted that several scientific studies have suggested that a combination of dietary supplements (none of which contain a banned substance) and exercise, can result in a positive nandrolone test. The theory behind the findings is that there is a link between heavy training, dehydration as a result from training, and their effects upon the components of high protein diets. James Toney would definitely fall into the category of a fighter engaging in a heavy amount of weight training and high protein diets. Toney also shed off plenty of pounds prior to his meeting with John Ruiz in a very short amount of time which could suggest that Toney was heavily dehydrating his body. [details]

I reckon Toney should be stripped of his boxing liscence... FOR GOOD!

Drugs and sport do not mix, ESPECIALLY boxing!

We got enough problems in our sport at the moment (multiple ridiculous governing bodies, corruption, and monopoly), last thing we need is DRUGS being added.

Mind you... I've never really been a fan of Toney's, I've always thought that he more represents the WWF Wrestling side of boxing with his loud talking, instead of the prefered no nonsense - Morales's, Barerra's, and Tszyu's of the boxing World.

I don't think we're gonna see Toney in the squared circle again...

i agree. i think he should have his licence stripped for some time but in football nandrolone has caused serious problems. look at the dutch squad. big name stars got banned for very long times and when their diets and training regimes were analysed, it was discovered that they had done nothing wrong. it is hard to decide how to punish this issue as it is so complex. id suggest a title stripping and short banbut not 4 life as he may be innocent and when banned....his whole life ruined due to financial loss

Why isn't anyone releasing the accuracy percentage of these test? maybe he didn't take steroids maybe he did. He had like a decade to build muscle mass.

i think it's important to state how large were the amounts of steroids found in his blood. and to check the levels in the next couple of weeks to see how they drop
