LOPEZ-GAMBOA: WHY WAIT?
By Danny Howard | February 05, 2010
You ask Arum and he'll say, "Because I know what the people want!" Let's get real here! Yes, both Lopez and Gamboa looked great in their double bill on HBO and a fight between the two would be magical, but Arum's fantasy of them cleaning up the Featherweight division is just a fantasy. As a matter of fact, it's tactically dangerous.
While Lopez did beat Steven Luevano and won a title, he followed Arum's blueprint for Pacquiao at lightweight by beating another Top Rank fighter who happened to have a belt at the weight. Lopez has also been avoiding Celestino Caballero like he's allergic to him and I wouldn't expect that fight to happen or for Arum to match him up against anybody like Caballero.
Gamboa hasn't even fought a top ten Featherweight to begin with. He holds the "regular" belt by the laughable WBA, but could you imagine him against Chris John? Bottom line is that neither guy is ready to tear anything up at all.
The gameplan is simple: expect both fighters to twin-bill independent Top Rank cards against woeful competition to keep them both undefeated and more money flowing in the bossman's pockets. Using this tactic, people might just get so tired of watching them beat up bums that they'll want to see them just fight each other and get it over with!
Besides, Gamboa and Lopez are the two biggest names at Featherweight anyway. A fight between the two now will be just as meaningful as it will be later.
