Even though I've only seen Campillo fight once, he really made a believer out of me last night. Besides the fact that he actually lost the fight in one of the most outrageous decisions I have ever seen, the dude impressed me to no end.
First off you have to love his defense. He blunted some powerful, explosive attacks to the head and the body over and over again, with a very subtle defense (and limited head movement). He keeps a tight guard, absorbs head punches with his gloves, and swings his elbows and forearms to deflect punches to the body. Also his patience is very unique. Even under fire, this dude never gets rattled, and he almost seems disinterested as he blocks an array of shots, and looks to counter.
My favorite thing is his punch accuracy though. I know he lacks power, and he often arm punches, but I can only respect those deceptively quick combinations. Power or not, I think he will keep his opponent honest. He was perfectly fine with making Shumenov look like a fool early in the round, as he loaded up on shots and gassed out. For the remainder of the round, Campillo's combinations and counters looked damn near unstoppable.
I realize he was only fighting Shumenov, but I can't help but think he could fight that way with the best of the division. He might not have a good chance at beating a Dawson, Hopkins, and possibly a Pascal, but I give him a hell of a chance against everybody else. In truth, just based on that one performance, I give him a 50/50 shot against Tavoris Cloud and Glen Johnson, and favor him over the rest of the LHWs in the Ring Top 10.
