Chad Dawson vs Andre Dirrell - how does this go?

I'm keen on both these guys. They're slick southpaws, amongst the fastest in their respective divisions (both in terms of handspeed and overall movement), and each would likely find success at 168 or 175. But if they were to meet - either at a 172 catchweight or in the aforementioned divisions (at which I'm pretty sure both are comfortable) - who would win?

Firstly, I give the edge in handspeed to Dirrell by a small but thorough margin - he would get his shots off first, and Dawson would be left squaring up too much to fire his own in return. As for movement, both seem very comfortable whilst fighting (keyword: boxing) going backwards - Dawson, however, likes to trade more up close and stand his ground occasionally. I'm not sure as to who'd bring the fight more, but I have a feeling it'd be Dawson being bolder.

When it comes to footwork, Dirrell places his feet much better and doesn't allow himself to get tangled up when trading or evading an attack. Dawson, on the other hand, looks off-balance a lot when he throws his combos, and doesn't bounce out of his own spot very well. Also, his hands have a bad habit of creeping down low when he lets 'em rip - a perfect chance for a quick Dirrell counter. Besides that, Dawson has a higher guard and likely the better defence.

I think it'd be an extremely close and tactical battle of wills, possibly with a flash a KD or two, and likely ending in an SD because of polarised opinions on who'd be landing cleaner (i.e. whether or not blocked jabs are to be counted when the other isn't attacking for the entire round). Something like Mayweather-Judah springs to mind, but with heart on both sides. My winner, though - Dirrell. Only just.

Your screen name is a pretty good summary for how that fight would play out

Chad is naturally much bigger, a technically better boxer, and has lot more power than given credit for.....I don't see a runner like Dirrell doing very much to convincingly win rounds against Dawson.

Now if you were talking Ward/Dawson, he have something here.

Ward has a chance to beat Dawson but I think Dirrell can beat Ward

I have seen Chad and Andre spar before...This was back when Floyd Mayweather Sr was Chad trainer.

Neither Chad nor Andre wanted to spar but Floyd urged it on and they ended in the ring for about 5 to 6 rounds I believe if memory serve me right.

I will tell you one thing......THESE TWO ARE FAST!!!

Eh? Dirrell is 6' 2", Dawson 6' 1". Despite being in a lighter division, Dirrell actually has a noticeably bigger build IMO.

Subjective. Both fight similarly, and have great skills. I've been a Dawson supporter for a li'l while, but lately I've been warming up to how good Dirrell is. Neither is that much skillful than the other.

Which he hasn't really demonstrated for while now. Granted, he knocked down Tarver, but I don't think Dawson is going to be sending waves across the world for his power - underrated or not.

They both have more 'pop' in their punches, as opposed to outright KO power.

What the hell? Dawson "ran" like nobody's business against Johnson on both occasions (I just re-watched their first fight and scored it 116-112 for Johnson; a complete turnaround from 112-116 on first viewing), as did Dirrell against Froch and a few others. They're both boxers who like to fight going backwards.

I really hate this "running" bull**** people keep spouting, when it's not even accurate in context. But then, I guess that's tantamount to all the unjustified Mayweather hatred, too...
