Comments Thread for: Donald "Don" King done more good or bad for boxing?

Donald "Don" King (born August 20, 1931) is an American boxing promoter particularly known for his hairstyle and flamboyant personality. His career highlights include promoting "The Rumble in the Jungle" and the "Thrilla in Manila", as well as orchestrating the ascent of Mike Tyson. King has promoted some of the most prominent names in boxing, including Muhammed Ali , Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Julio César Chávez, Andrew Golota, Felix Trinidad, Roy Jones Jr. and Larry Holmes.

King has been around since 1974 he was behind negotiating Ali vs Foreman in Zaire "The Rumble in the jungle". He started taking boxingoutside america and onto the biggest stages Ali vs Frazier III "Thrilla in Manilla". He whether you likehim or not has given us some of the biggest fights and names in boxing. Fighters like Larry Holmes, Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfredo Gómez, and Alexis Arguello would all fight under the Don King Productions promotional banner in the 1970s. In the 80' and on he gave us Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Julio César Chávez, Aaron Pryor, Bernard Hopkins, Ricardo Lopez, Felix Trinidad, Terry Norris, Carlos Zarate, Azumah Nelson, Andrzej Gołota, Mike McCallum, Gerald McClellan, Meldrick Taylor, Marco Antonio Barrera and Ricardo Mayorga are some of the boxers who chose King to promote many of their biggest fights. We all talk about him cheating fighters and being bad but where would boxing be today without King?

Food for thought....King is 79 year young hearing some stuff on the show Wednesday night made me think about this....Lefty

Has done as much, if not more, than any promoter in recent history. Getting blackballed from HBO certainly hurt him.

More good than bad and he used to put on fights that had undercards as good as the main event. Not these **** undercards that Arum rips the fans off with.

I am going to be a little bias here, but ever since Don King took over Tyson way back when, I have hated him. I am a huge Tyson fan, and Tyson was already going through way to much, Don King? He just added to the mess. In conclusion, I don't care for the king.

Don has been great for boxing. Truth be told a lot of the hate King gets is because of his race. I am not saying King never did anything wrong but alot people mad because King out smarted a lot of people no matter what race they were.

This is real f#cked up but Don King told the truth when he said "If I was robbing Mike Tyson he still made more money with me robbing him than he did with those other people". Bob Arum right now is trying to do what King did years ago.

One thing for sure 2 if for certain Don King would not have let Manny walk away from $40 million. Don King understands money and knows your personal feelings for another man has nothing to do with business when the money is that big and possibly bigger.

Don King all at the sametime is quite possibly the best and most crooked promoter of ALL-TIME!!!

king has not made boxing better in any way. he has ruined countless live with his greed. dont say he did big things for boxing. boxing did big things for him. he wasnt needed to make the rumble in jungle or any other fight. boxing would have been just fine and imo much better had he never come along.
