My analysis of the Corrales/Castillo fight.

The inside fighting was brutal! And that should have favored Castillo as he is the better inside fighter and has the more powerful short punch. However, when Corrales suddenly stepped back, he unloaded a massive left hook that rocked Castillo! And his eyes seemed to get glassy right then. But Corrales continued the infighting and Castillo eventually began to wear him down!

But again and again, Corrales would step back and BAM! Left Hook! It sapped the sharpness out of Castillo. But what a sacrifice Corrales took just to hurt Castillo! Chico had both eyes swollen, he was wobbled and Castillo's body attack was making him breath hard.

And then the first mouth piece round. Chico took 4 good shots from Castillo and the mouth piece went out. Precious seconds was granted to Chico when it had to get washed out. Chico won the beginning of that round but Castillo pulled it out in the end.

Then the legendary 3 knockdown round. You all read the other threads about it. Chico used the mouth piece tactic to clear his head - TWICE. Coz he never really recoverd from the first KD. In my opinion, I think he needed that second KD so he could have more time to recover. And boy, did that work! Coz Castillo was hurt from the previous round and Chico knew it was just a matter of time. Chico sent Castillo into the ropes and the ref stopped it. Castillo took the shots like a warrior but it cost him.

If there's a rematch, I think Corrales will box more than fight inside.

^ Great Post! excellent analyzation of the fight. the stoppage could be questioned cuz it seemed a second or two early, but it would have been the same result. i'm actually back and forth on the stoppage because in the replay you could see dat castillo's eyes were closed when he was being battered on the ropes. but he's a champ so you gotta give him a chance to go down and possibly getup.

nah man, it was a good stoppage, similar to vargas being stopped by de la hoya, except castillo hadnt gone down, but same thing, he was trapped on the ropes, only not in a corner.

im guessing the referee has seen the emile griffith story and doesnt wanna be stuck in that boat.

I disagree that Castillo has a harder inside punch, but he is a more skilled inside fighter, he has a really good uppercut that was hurting Corrales alot and setting him up for other punches, but when they traded hooks inside I though Corrales had the harder ones. Castillo Left Hook at range was alot more damaging that his left hook in close which is strange because everybody thought that Corrales needed to fight at range to get his power in, I guess that theory is incorrect. Corrales proved in this fight anyway that he can fight on the inside with anybody, and Corrales has really good handspeed, and great recovering abilities. It would be hard for anybody to beat him, but if there is a rematch between Castillo and Corrales its 50/50 with me. I dont know if Corrales will want to rematch Castillo though even though he said he did because you dont want to fight too many fights in that style if you want to have a long career, especially when you got the nod in the first fight and have the belts.

MY Analysis of the CASTILLO/CORRALES FIGHT

I just saw it a 2nd time and I'm just speechless..The fight was close the whole time and all the rounds were very hard to score..it was corrales winning the first half of rounds then castillo winning the 2nd half of the round..both guys looked like they got rocked at least 5 times each..and wow the 10th round is just unbelievable.corrales rocked castillo i think it was at the end of 5th round..it also made him do what cotto did vs corley...castillo had diego seriously hurt in the 8th round and you could tell he spit out the mouth piece on purpose to get extra time..earlier in the 8th round he got rocked and it looked like he was thinking about dropping his mouth piece...the nhe got rocked again and spit it out..and then did the smart thing by getting seperation away frmo castillo for the ref to stop it..in my opinion a very smart move by corrales..He spit and took out the mouthpiece twice in round 10 which bought him extra time and it is ok to do so..IT is ring smarts..but I just wish the ref would have made chico fight without the mouthpiece like most of you guys said...the outcome could have been different or it would have been the same..We would never know..All i know is that I just saw the best fight of my life..and these 2 warriors deserve a seirous pay raise...hopefully we will be blessed with a rematch someday...Thank god for Corrales and Castillo

oh yeah was it me or did corrales seem discouraged after 8 rounds..his trainer told him not to give up...maybe because he was hitting castillo with some killer shots..or maybe it was his eye..I thought it might have been chico being exhausted from all the left hooks to the body..but he dug deep and grab his balls and came up at the end...if theres rematch im willing to bet all my points on castillo

I did mention that Corrales popped Castillo with that left hook when he stepped back from the inside fighting. Corrales more than held his own against Castillo, but Castillo was aiming for the ribs while Coralles was nailing Castillo on the forehead and jaw. I knew just from the first 4 rounds of inside fighting, it would not go the full fight and I had a feeling that Corrales would run out of gas. I think that's why he really had no choice but to unload on Castillo and take his sharpness out with those left hooks. It slowed Castillo down to the point that he was winging his punches with less accuracy. But since Corrales was there trading with him, he nailed Chico several times.

It was an ebb and flow battle. In the end, it was Chico's rings smarts from the Freitas fight that got him to win. The theme of Showtime's article on Corrales was "Full Circle". His battles with Casamayor who was then coached by Goosen, to Goosen coaching Chico to defeat Casamayor. And in Chico's last fight was with Freitas, who tried to use the mouth piece trick to get his head cleared when he got clocked by Chico. And now, another full circle, Chico uses the same tactic to clear his head and come back from the brink of defeat and KO Castillo!
