Orlando 'Phenomenon' Cruz, who in 2009 lost his undefeated after 16 wins of which seven got them by knockout, will start 2010 with a tough test when measured on 20 February in Mexico City against the Former WBO bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon, it was learned.
Cruz, whose official mark of 16-1-1 and 7 is asleep, fell last September in five rounds against Cornelius Lock though was dominating the fight, in its first commitment under the Golden Boy Promotions.
Ponce de Leon, with a track record of 37-2 - and 31 anesthetized, has won his last three fights after being knocked out in 2008 in an assault by Juan Manuel Lopez, losing around his scepter at 122 pounds.
Cruz will be fighting in the featherweight division and the winner would be placed in good position for a WBO title fight in or CMB. Ponce de Leon was being coached by Fernando Soto boricua but the latter broke off relations with the Aztec work a week ago and now another pueretorriqueño, Eric Bonilla, is responsible for its preparation.
