Interview WITH UPCOMING JR. WELTERWEIGHT PROSPECT Lanard Lane

    Interviewer: Paris Barnhill

P.B: Hello Lanard, thanks for taking the time out, how are you?

L.L: Im doin well, thanks for having me.

P.B: How did you get involved in the sport, and at what age did you turn pro?

L.L: I got into the sport as a teenager being real active, playing basketball and doing karate as a young kid. I really enjoyed combat sports so I got involved in boxing you know, I watched Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard all those guys inspired me and motivated me to get into boxing. I turned pro at the age of 25.

P.B: How long was your amatuer career and what was your record?

L.L: My amatuer career, I had 76 fights and like ten losses. My losses were mainly because of the politics of the sport. I've never been hurt, knocked down or even ko'd. I really enjoyed it though getting the experience and traveling it had it's ups and downs but it was cool.

P.B: Now your fighting out of Houston, but your originally from Philly, are you still training at J Prince's Gym?

L.L: Actually I was born in Philly, but I was raised out here in Houston. Yea I did start at Prince's gym it was great, but my trainer and I just made the transition over to Savannah's Boxing gym because we wanted to be around better fighters and better people. They have great trainers such as Ronnie Shields, J.Johns and I got better sparring helping Juan Diaz prepare for most of his Title fights. Omar Henry, Jamall Chello, we're all doin well and are undefeated fighters.

P.B: Now your coming off an impressive Ko of El Harrak, which moves your record to 10-0-7 and your ranked 12th in the USA. Whats next for you Lanard?

L.L: Yes, on February 19th on ESPN 2 Friday night fights I have another 8 round fight against Martin Tucker he's ranked 23 in the USA his record is 7-3. He actually just beat a guy who was 13-0 in his previous fight, which is good for him. It's also another good look for me, and I get another televised show it's a blessing. Most people didn't get to see my talent on my showtime debut because it only went two rounds. So my fans get see more and more of Lanard and I hope they like what they see.

P.B: Your also a fulltime firefighter, how does that conflict with your training schedule?

L.L: Actually it's the best thing that ever happened to me, I've learned so much being a firefighter itself. It's also a great career, benefits, and good pension. I only work 2 days out the week, I work two 24 hr shifts. So I'm off five days which allows me time to train. I have a great team of trainers and fighters around me at all times. We all train together Cintron, Omar, Diaz, and have a great relationship.

P.B: Now you have very fast hands and a all action style, is that something we can look forward to seeing more from you Lanard?

L.L: Yes, definately thats the way I train coming off my speed, throwing alot of punches, good shape. I'm always in great shape and I'm always working hard in the gym and in the ring. Honestly my last fight was fairly easy for me because I work so hard in the gym. It wasn't like he was a bum he's a really good fighter. So I'm glad all my hard work paid off.

P.B: I agree you looked very impressive in that fight.

    L.L: Thanks man.

P.B: Whats your thoughts on the Mayweather, Pacquiao situation?

L.L: Aww Man, I think if I was Floyd I would handle the situation somehow, someway, I couldnt just let 40 million walk away. I mean this is what they do, you dont know how many opportunities you get like this, it's the fight of the decade and the fight the fans want to see. Floyd is undefeated so he know's how to protect himself, even if Pacquiao is on something it will all come out. Like Oscar when he k.o'd Vargas everybody knew Vargas was dirty, but Oscar took the fight and got the K.o.

P.B: Ok I want to thank you again Lanard for taking the time and good luck on your next fight.

L.L. No problem, thanks for having me.

No, he is VERY VERY good as a matter of fact. It looks like he is being built along side Shawn Porter and Fernando Guerrero now so he will get more exposure.
