Let's say 10 years from now Manny Pacquiao gives his "Mark McGwire" speech; (this isn't intended to be a trash thread so please don't take it there)
Miguel Cotto's career will have been ruined by losses to Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao. Why? Primarily because his trainer, management and promotional company let him down. Fighters are supposed to have courage. Cotto has that. But they're supposed to have people looking out for their best interest. On it's own, the Margarito fight irreparably damaged Cotto. Now imagine if Pacquiao, who clearly put the finishing touches on Cotto, was cheating too.
Cotto's career will have become an example of a potential all time great who didn't get there because of lack of protection. In my mind, that's why Mayweather never fought Margarito. Freddie Roach himself said he'd heard rumors for years that Margarito loaded his gloves and wouldn't let his fighters spar with Capetillo fighters. I doubt Roach is the only person who'd heard those rumors. With someone like Roach in his corner, Cotto may never have fought Margarito, but at least he wouldn't be shot.
Now, I'm not here to say yes or no on Pacquiao and PEDs. I'm just saying if he did use them then Miguel Cotto got royally screwed over by Top Rank and everyone else who was supposed to be watching out for him. Yeah he made a lot of money fighting with Top Rank, but looking at the damage he's taken in the last two years...the money he made doesn't make up for what they let him walk into at least once.
