Notes about Tuesday Pacquiao - Clottey presser
January 16, 9:28 PMDallas Boxing Matt Stolow
DALLAS - Even the 1:00 PM press conference at Cowboys Stadium Tuesday to formally announce the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight March 13 will break some records.
First a 60 - foot stage is being erected for all the VIPs and other invited guests who are expected to speak or be introduced.
It will be covering the midfield Cowboys star on the field.
The 180 - foot long HD TV will be lowered all the way down to just 30 - feet above the field and be in full glorious operation during the press conference.
Along with the principals: Pacquiao, Clottey and promoters Bob Arum and Jerry Jones, expect entertainment by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. This will be the first time NFL Cheerleaders have performed at a boxing press conference.
Invited guests will include some former Dallas Cowboys greats such as Tony Dorsett, Ed "To Tall" Jones, Drew Pearson, Tony Hill, and Preston Pearson.
Former world champions from Dallas - Fort Worth will be invited including: Hall of Famer and former welterweight champion Curtis Cokes; former middleweight champion Quincy Taylor; former welterweight champion Donald Curry; former junior welterweight champion Gene Hatcher; former featherweight champions Stevie Cruz, and Troy Dorsey; and former bantamweight champion Paulie Ayala.
The Pacquiao vs. Clottey slogan will be "The Event." The official poster artwork will be released at the Tuesday presser. I got a sneak peak and it looks marvelous.
The presser will be for media and invited guests only. The public will not be invited.
Where are they now?
Once rumored to be Paquiao's opponent March 13, Yuri Foreman is now expected to face former Pacquiao victim Miguel Cotto in June in New York.
Long-time friend and a ring announcer spanning three decades, Shelly Mann, 71, died Monday and he was buried Friday in Dallas. Growing up in New York, Shelly even went to the same high school as Bob Arum.
Jerry Jones' Dallas Cowboys are in a divisional playoff game Sunday at Minnesota against the Vikings.
