Opinion: Mayweather Avoiding Top Contenders to Preserve Unblemished Record

The undefeated boxer is reportedly eying Nate Campbell, a known lightweight, as his next opponent. Undefeated American professional boxer Floyd Mayweather is reportedly avoiding top boxing contenders in order to ensure another win and keep his unblemished record. After the failed Pacquiao-Mayweather match originally scheduled for March 13, Pacquiao has moved on to face Joshua Clottey of Ghana on the same date but different venue. Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, made a deal with Jerry Jones of Cowboys Stadium in Arlington Texas for the staging of the Pacquiao-Clottey match. According to Arum everything has set and final announcement will be made next week. Manny Pacquiao and his entourage are flying to the US early next week for the fight announcement and promotional tour that will bring the two fighters to Texas and California While Pacquiao will start training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood for his date with Clottey, the undefeated Mayweather has yet to find his opponent. Several candidates have been mentioned including Pauli Malignaggi,Tim Bradley, Kermit Cintron and Nate Campbell. But it seems Mayweather is not in a hurry to make his choice. Internet reports indicate that Mayeather is seriously considering Nate Campbell who is a lightweight. Campbell fought Ali Funeka at 135 pounds almost a year ago and nearly lost. Campbell later engaged Tim Bradley at 140 pounds but got a no-contest ruling because of cut on his left eye. The weight disparity between Mayweather and Campbell is evident and boxing fans believe that if the fight happens, it is going to be a lopsided fight in favor of Mayweather. Mayweather, who is a full welterweight, fought Juan Manuel Marquez and successfully preserved his zero loss record. The match-up was considered by many boxing fans as a lopsided fight since Marquez is a lightweight and it was his first fight on the welterweight category. Boxing fans believe that Mayweather should be choosing from the likes of Mosley, Andre Berto, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams or even Miguel Cotto whom Pacquiao defeated late last year. These boxers are in his own category as a welterweight. The questions that fans are asking is why is Mayweather choosing from among the lightweights or those whose winning records are not as impressive as his own? Mayweather does not need to take a risk to make millions of dollars so he will carefully choose his opponent that he thinks he will defeat to keep his zero loss record.
