I just read a comment made by one of my fellow writers here at **********, stating "if Ali was fighting today he would be Floyd Mayweather." It pretty much forces my hand to take a stand and challenge this wrongful comparison. It was also brought up in the same statement that Ali did awful things to Joe Frazier ,so that makes him an awful person. Boy oh boy! Talk about off base.
First off I am a black man in my thirties ,who was born and raised in Philadelphia. The same city that Joe Frazier has called his home for many years. Also the same city that a man by the name of Frank Rizzo called his home. You ********** readers probably never have heard of Frank Rizzo. Rizzo was the Police Commissioner and later Mayor here in Philadelphia. During Rizzo's terms as Commissioner and Mayor, the relationship between ********** and the police were at an all time low. There are recorded incidents of police sicking dogs on citizens, racially motivated beatings by white cops etc.
Alot of these incidents went un punished by Rizzo. So he was mostly despised by the black community. Joe Frazier and Frank Rizzo were friends! Now during the Civil Rights movement , that is not the perception you would want to convey if you are a prominent black athlete. I'm not saying Joe Frazier was an "Uncle Tom", I beleive he made a bad PR move and he didn't know any better. But alot of people percieved him to be one, especially here in this city. Joe Frazier also refused to call Ali by his chosen Islamic name. He repeatedly referred to him as "Clay". That was very insulting , especially during the 60's and 70's. So while Ali was definitely cruel and excessive to Frazier, we must know ALL the facts that precipitated these things.
Ali hated to be called Clay. He took that as the ultimate insult to his character and principles. So much so that he sacrificed his career and more importantly his freedom by refusing to be inducted into the military because they did not address him properly. If Floyd Mayweather had these same principles since he has no Civil Rights incidents to fight in this time, lets see him refuse to box again, period. Unless each state across the US mandates blood testing for PED's. Since he is such a humanitarian take a stand against Pacquiao getting in the ring with any future opponents not just himself. If they are so alike Ali did!
In 1974 Ali had an opponent who like Pacquiao was a monster. A monster who like Pacquiao to Floyd, performed better against common opponents. Remember George Foreman. The guy who had knocked out Joe Frazier and Ken Norton in two rounds apiece and Ali had went a combined 51 rounds with the same guys and his record at the time against those guys were 2-2. The George Foreman who was 7 years younger, much stronger , bigger and a bigger puncher. Did I say undefeated. Oh **** Ali please don't fight him he may kill you, he's literally punching holes in heavybags no normal man can do things like that. It's not possible he his not of this world. All you new fans can click onto youtube and see what Ali did. If Floyd had on the inside of him what Ali had, then he would put his self in another place mentally dance all over Manny Pacquiao. We should celebrating his birthday (January 17,1942) of this great great man. But instead his name gets insulted, when it gets written that he would be Floyd Mayweather if he were fighting today. No way , not my idol. Not Muhammad Ali.
