Here is the reason Floyd Mayweather should have taken the fight in the first place in spite of the 24-day take-it-or- take-a hike stance of team Pacquiao. They fight, he wins, and he takes the pound-for-pound spot and solidifies his take as the best boxer of this generation (after he beats two more welters of course). If he wins, a lot of pundits will be proven wrong and will come up with reasons like Pacquiao was too small or even tailor-made for his style. This in turn will expose the punditry into fan-boyism where they will demand he next faces the winner of Mosley-Berto and fan-boyism into hater when they demand him next to meet Paul Williams.

So it seems Floyd is in a lose- lose situation here, right? Wrong. Facing or not facing Pacquiao will not remove the fact that he has not faced a real welterweight in four years. With the many blogs and sports articles that will be written about it won’t even escape a casual fan’s eye that he did lack in solid opposition. In short, while he has returned to boxing, he has no choice but to face the winner of Mosley-Berto and another welterweight at least considered being in the risk level of Paul Williams-- and that’s the law. In fact Paul Williams’ promoter Dan Goosen came out with a statement in Mark Vester’s column in BoxingScene.com saying “If we were asked, I’d pick Paul up, and we’d be there as fast as we could get there to sign the contract”.

By beating Pacquiao this will make a case for Floyd as the most popular athlete (as Tiger Woods is in hiatus) and losing to Pacquiao does not make him less of a fighter either. In fact it could be a masterful move on his part. Granting he loses to Pacquiao, he can always resort to the PEDS or Performance Enhancing Drama and demand a rematch with finality clause on the random blood-testing. Result: Highest payday for a rematch in the history of combat sports. A definite Win.

We have to understand that egos, reputation and legacies (not to mention $$$$$) are at stake so only the perfect strategy should be employed. Strategy-wise for Floyd, had he accepted “grudgingly” the 24-day offer by team Pacquiao then he had already won the war. That was the wisest move in all things considered in The Art of War. That could have won him more fans that even if he lost the fight will only make PEDS the scarlet letter of Pacquiao even more.

If he loses he still wins as the 24-day demand of team Pacquiao will explode in their faces now more than ever that ultra-nationalist Sen. John Mc Cain will be entering the picture doing what a politician does best by calling a Senate Inquiry to the PEDS allegations and goodbye legacy for the non-American phenom. According to Bob Arum at least former President George W. Bush kept it real in a recent Dallas Cowboys game when he was told while watching the game, “We don’t need Mayweather go on with the fight”.

Be that as it may Floyd chose what he deems fit for his liking getting into low-risk fights where he could have just masterfully boxed (for sweet science lovers) en route to a 12-round decision as he always did against come-forward warriors in the past. Well it is a “could”, a “should” and for Floyd fans a big “WOULD”, as in he would have done this or that to that fighter whom he never faced. That is his masterstroke. That is the definition he wants to be. He is undefeated. And that’s the meaning of Floyd.
