Dawson I agree, Toney was about Cruiserweight when Calzaghe got a belt so I couldn't see that fight ever being viable. Abraham was at middleweight so maybe for the right Money he would of moved up. Was Froch ever a viable opponent when Calzaghe was around? Not familiar with Bute so I cant comment.

by beating at least one great prime fighter. after Kessler's thorough destruction at the hands of Ward, I think it's safe to say that Kessler will never even be close to being an atg and that was Calzaghe's best win over a prime fighter. He could have grown the balls in the late 90's and early 2000's to fly over to the states and fight at least 1 or 2 fighters on American soil to earn a shot at hopkins or jones. but instead he made excuses like "I'm afraid of flying" but that fear quickly went away after hopkins and jones were past it. but at least he admitted that jones was the superior fighter and that if he was going to fight jones(in his prime) than he would need to get offered enough money for it.

wow a lot of claims you have made need to be backed up..


As for Kessler he hasn't looked to be on the same level as he was pre-Calzaghe. Inactivity might have cost kessler a lot. Kessler does deserve credit for taking on Ward in his hometown. The referee was vastly inexperienced at that level of boxing and maybe should not have been choosen.

What you should ask yourself is, who DID he fight during his prime?

Realisticly he should have fought the following.

Hopkins 5 years earlier
Johnson @ 175 after he beat RJJ (Johnson's 168 resume is a joke)
Ottke (99-04)
Eshols (03-05)
Green (03-05)
Thomas Tate (not pulling out with injury instead of late replacement Pudwill.)
Bute (instead of Manfredo)
Dawson after RJJ

There are perfectly reasonable explainations why these fights didn't happen but they would certainly improved his resume.

All these require a perfect world where people are willing to make fights happen and thats involves both parties.

Some of them are not as good as fights that did take place (I put Mitchell, Brewer and Ried over Tate, Green and Eshols for example)

I'm sure he could've found guys better than David Starie if he wanted. He complained about making weight but couldn't bring himself to try a LHW contender even though most were more recognizable and better than the bottom feeders at 168.

Yeah I remember the commentators talking about that during his fight with Robin Reid. Some of the guys he fought were quite shocking, there was no excuse for the Jones and Manfredo fights, that's for sure. He should of realized that his belt was far from recognized, so no top American champion could of been expected to travel to Britain to fight him. Lewis, Benn and Bruno were all willing to fight in America, so why not him as well?

What you should ask yourself is, who DID he fight during his prime?

I think the Jeff Lacy fight was considered his biggest win during his prime. I think his mo was, one mandatory and one journeymen each year.

In fairness Starie was billed as a battle of Britain. lets not forget that Starie was one of many robbed by Ottke.

I am more critical of fights like Mkrtchyan, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Kabary Salem and Will McIntyre.
