Floyd wanted to fight Mosely back in 2006 after the Mosely/Vargas fight. Mosely refused and said he was going on vacation w/ his fine wife (Jin) and the family. Mayweather fought Dela Hoya after Mosely declined the fight.
Margarito wants to fight Mayweather and Mosley. Mayweather wants to fight Mosley and De La Hoya, and as he said, Margarito is at the end of the list.
Mayweather explained his reason for putting Margarito last on his list, and I understand it completely.
"Who has he ever fought? Nobody knows who he is,'' Mayweather said. "I'm trying to make pay per view fights. Who's going to pay to see me fight him? Now people will pay to see me and Mosley fight because they know who he is. He's fought everybody. He beat Oscar twice and he beat Vargas twice. Who wouldn't pay to see that? I can't make no money fighting Margarito.''
If the name of the game is to make good matches and make good money, then Mayweather is right. I don't understand the fixation on Margarito. His resume isn't stacked with world class caliber opponents. He hasn't beaten anyone along the lines of Mosley or Mayweather. This isn't an attack on Margarito. Everyone has to start somewhere. But why does Mayweather need to fight him now? I'm not so sure if that $8 million that Bob Arum of Top Rank, Margarito's promoter, has put on the table for that match with Mayweather is real. And if it is it can only go higher if Mayweather beats Mosley and De La Hoya and fights Margarito sometime next fall.
Mayweather fighting Mosley is the biggest pay per view fight boxing match out there outside of Mayweather-De La Hoya. If Mayweather beats Mosley, who has beaten De La Hoya and Vargas twice, then Mayweather-De La Hoya next May is a bonanza. It would challenge Lewis-Tyson (1.9 million) and certainly surpass Holyfield-Lewis (1.4 million) in terms of pay per view buys. One pay per view maven was practically salivating at the thought of a Mayweather pay per view daily double of Mosley and then De La Hoya. You could hear the cash registers ringing from his head. Cha-Ching!
First you have to convince Mosley to fight again this year. He wants to take a break for the rest of the year, which is understandable because he had to fight the two matches against Vargas in a five-month span. Plus, he said he wanted to get down to 147 pounds, having overstayed his welcome at 154 pound (but he did pocket over $6 million in the process).
Mayweather joked (at least I think he was joking) that he was going to ask Jin Mosley, Shane's wife, if she would let her husband fight him in November. Jin Mosley helps her husband make business decisions, which isn't a bad thing. But boxing is a macho sport where that kind of input from a woman, particularly a wife, is frowned upon.
"I wear the pants in my family and she wears the pants in his family,'' Mayweather said.
Ouch! The first shot across the bow has been launched.
You can bet that there's going to be a lot of pressure on Mosley to make that fight with Mayweather in November. And there probably won't be much of a need for a circus after that one because the ringmaster, De La Hoya, would be next up for Mayweather.
