Mayweather vs Mosley To Happen Before Pacquiao Fight?
By MannyLP - 29th November 2009
Bernard Hopkins spoke to an internet website (boxingscene) saying that "[Mayweather] will fight Shane Mosley before he fights Pacquiao. Pacquiao is probably going to fight the ***ish kid at 154 [Yuri Foreman], and Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather are going to fight. And then the winner will fight Pacquiao for all the marbles - by late next year. All of that is going to happen. I think so. That's my prediction," he told Bill Emes.
In my opinion, this makes the most sense for Mayweather. Read on for more…
He could make upwards of $25 million fighting Mosley. If he were to fight Pacquiao first, sure he could probably make more, say $30 million, but if he loses to Pacquiao, then a fight with Shane Mosley would be off the table because Mosley would opt to fight Pacquiao instead. However, should Mayweather beat Mosley and sell close to 2 million pay per views in the process, he could then enter negotiations with Pacquiao with much more leverage because Pacquiao would not sell any where near that with Foreman. Mayweather could easily get a 60-40 split in the negotiations with Pacquiao which would net him well over $30 million. And so a fight with Pacquio after having beat Mosley would net Mayweather much more money than if he went straight after Pacquiao first.
Of course all of this is predicated on Mosley beating Andre Berto on Jaunuary 30th which isn’t an easy fight.
Furthermore, perhaps Mosley beats Berto, but reveals that he can’t handle Berto’s speed well. He would make himself ripe for the plucking for a guy like Mayweather.
Also, who would criticize Mayweather for fighting Shane Mosley? That is a fight everyone has been wanting to see for a long time. It would sell well in the American audience which is where the bulk of pay per view dollars come from.
Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, has said many times that he wants nothing to do with Mosley. Which leaves Pacquiao without many options. Many people want to see a third fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, but he needs to get back on the win column before he can be taken seriously.
A fight with Yuri Foreman is interesting, but not a blockbuster. It would net Pacquiao another title in another weight class but isn’t a fight I imagine HBO doing a 24/7 series for.
Hopkins went on to say, "They all gonna talk but they ain't going to get no deal done, I don't think. Arum doesn't want to do a deal. We want to do a deal with Pacquiao or anybody. Schaefer has got good intent. At the end of the day, I think it's going to be Sugar Shane and Mayweather and the winner will fight Pacquiao. And Pacquiao will fight at 154. They are not going to get a deal. Pacquiao has nobody else to fight to make that money. He's going to fight Arum's fighter, that ***ish kid who won the title and Pacquiao is going to win a title at 154,"
