It brings me no satisfaction telling you that I told you so. But let's get real here. Mayweather's camp played Pacquiao and Top Rank like a fiddle.
Rewind a month back. I told you Floyd never wanted the fight for March. His initial announcement on agreeing to fight Pacquiao is nothing but a systematic ploy to make things work to his favor.
Based on facts and inside info I've gathered from back then, the plan has always been for Floyd to fight in England. All this talk was to keep his name on the headlines and corner Pacquiao to make it seem as if he was the one who truly wanted the fight. They tried to catch Pacquiao off-guard with his busted eardrum and political aspirations clogging his schedule but Team Pacquiao did everything it took to make this fight happen and they agreed to fight Mayweather without hesitation. Things got silent, and next thing you know Golden Boy and Team Mayweather pulled a rabbit out of their hats with that press release implicating Pacquiao with steroids.
If you asked me, they pretty much played all of the fans too. At least that is based on my analysis. See, a fight against Matthew Hatton provides a big and easy payday for both Floyd and GBP. The Brits got money to blow you know? And in case you forgot, their boxing fans are willing to spend and support their own. And no matter how far-fetched Magic's chances are against Money, they will still fill any stadium to see their boy get a chance to avenge his big bro against the USA's biggest boxing celebrity.
A fellow Examiner here even encouraged readers to ignore doubters and assured that this mega-fight is indeed happening in March. See if I was simply sitting on my couch and writing articles about news I see on Pacland or Google then perhaps that would be my stand as well. I don't sleep on my job though. I crank the phone lines, talk to fellow writers, boxing promoters, publicists and people in Pacquiao and Mayweather's camp on a daily basis. As unlikely as it might seem, I even hung out with Floyd's people back in Vegas and got info about when Floyd started working out with Roger way back in the last weeks of November for a "possible" fight in England. Check the archives, it's there.
This fight was never on. I wanted to believe otherwise and for me to be wrong, because as a boxing fan, who would want this fight not to happen? Sorry boxing fans, you have been taken for a ride. Even Top Rank chief Bob Arum had his reservations and su****ions from way back when he said he thought the Mayweather camp had "an agenda". Just as any promoter would do however, you got to go through the motions and make things work. Unfortunately, nothing came out of it.
And isn't it odd that Floyd Mayweather Jr. himself has been quiet? The last time I remember Floyd this quiet was when he had that mysterious "rib injury". You're telling me it didn't take more than 24 hours for him to have that video interview about what he thought about Pacquiao's win over Cotto yet he had nothing to say regarding all this steroids drama and negotiations that's been going on?
I don't know about you, but this is no news to me at all. I do believe though that the fight will eventually happen still. Perhaps at the end of the year after another tune-up and payday for Floyd and that Hatton fight. All this hype and disappointment may seem frustrating now, but at the end of the day, this is the fight everyone wants. Floyd will eventually drop the Olympic Drug testing demand or agree to a compromise, and this fight will happen before 2010 ends. I ain't no Nostradamus, but chances are, and my MMA predictions accuracy should attest to this, I am pretty accurate with my analysis.
