I'm kinda stuck on Ishy Aytan's right now. That broken jaw thing sounds familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
I thought a 'bomber' in the early 1950's....... lost a split decision but fought with a broken jaw the whole fight. I came back and stopped the punk a year later in the 6th.
Not so many Hall of Famers debuted against champs or future champs. Most touted individuals start against relative "cans." I'm guessing this is a bit of a throw back fighter..

I lost track... is the guy you're talking about from the US? Wasn't sure if you said it as a clue, or rejected someone else's answer because of it. I thought for sure that the answer was Margarito or Barrera which is why I proceeded with the next question
