to fight Malignaggi? Remember this is the same guy who retired when Cotto was at the top, stayed retired when Marg got through with him, STAYED retired after Mosley's big win. And when Floyd did come back, it was the same nonsense about Mosley either not being a draw or JMM being a tune-up.
When does he lose the benefit of the doubt? Did he lose it when he retired? Remember he was supposed to fight Oscar in a rematch before that.
The big thing with Floyd before he retired was the fact that he hadn't faced an elite Welterweight. He fights at Welterweight, he called himself the lineal champion, yet he has yet to face an elite natural Welterweight. If and when he faces Paulie, that will still ring true.
Does the money excuse matter now? Paulie is not the draw that Mosley, Cotto, even Margarito is (in LA or Vegas at least). There is no way he brings more money than the names mentioned.
Does the win/loss excuse matter? Paulie was beaten up by Cotto and humiliated by Hatton already.
Can he call it a tune-up? Maybe if he were planning on making an appearence on the Jersey Shore it'd be a tune-up for something. As for a tune-up for a bigger fight? Been there done that with Marquez.
So if this fight doesn't get made and Manny goes on to face yet another difficult task in Yuri Foreman (laugh all you want, Foreman is a natural boxer and a lot longer than Pac, he has the style to give him fits), while Floyd fights Paulie, will you give him the benefit of the doubt, or will it just be another weak Mayweather excuse?
