Floyd can step up the podium! Why not step up and fight someone legit?
Floyd Mayweather must be pretty scared to come up with this Olympic drug testing nonsense. He must be aware that Manny Pacquiao is the most threatening fighter he will ever face, should he choose to actually fight him. Perhaps his drug testing demand is his way out.
There is no precedent for the kind of testing Floyd Mayweather and Golden Boy are attempting to impose on Manny Pacquiao. In fact, no fighter has ever been asked to undergo this type of testing prior to a fight. Why Pacquiao? Why now? It’s odd that someone like Floyd Mayweather who has said that Pacquiao is one dimensional and would be an easy fight would create this additional hoop for Pacquiao to jump through.
Of course, the Mayweather’s have slanderously accused Pacquiao of being on some sort of PED. There is no moral imperative for Pacquiao to disprove these unsubstantiated claims. And yet, the justification for the extraordinary testing procedure would in fact be these false claims.
The idea that the reputation or legacy of Manny Pacquiao would suffer due to lies and innuendo is silly, but if it does it would be criminal. Challenge and risk are at the heart of what makes boxing so compelling. Who in the modern era has lived up to that more than Manny Pacquiao? Pacquiao has consistently stepped up to face challenges. Pacquiao has consistently put himself at risk in order to take a direct path to result. It was Pacquiao who made Oscar De La Hoya quit, taught Ricky Hatton to play dead and made Miguel Cotto quit fighting and retreat until being finished in the 12th round. In addition to those great wins, Pacquiao owns wins over Barrera, Morales and Marquez. On top of all that he is a peerless sportsman, always respectful of his opponent.
Pacquiao’s legacy is set, what he’s achieved by merit in the ring can’t be tarnished by lies. I can’t blame Pacquiao for refusing the testing demands of Mayweather. It’s just unfortunate that his refusal give in to Mayweather on the testing issue has lead some to assume Pacquiao is guilty of using PED’s. But, consider the sources. The Mayweather’s have been guilty of things like dealing drugs and domestic violence etc. Golden Boy had refused to allow Mosley to take these same tests that they are now demanding on behalf of Mayweather. Not to mention the strong evidence that they’ve attempted or had fights fixed. I think it’s safe to say that Pacquiao has a little more credibility than Mayweather and Golden Boy. People might be disappointed that it looks like the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather won’t happen, but one way or the other Floyd Mayweather finds a reason or rationale to not take on the biggest challenges. This fight not happening would be far from surprising, considering Floyd Mayweather is involved. It was just a month and a half ago that Manny Pacquiao gave us a great fight, knocking out Miguel Cotto. When was the last time you could say that of Floyd Mayweather?
