  • Dr. Margaret Goodman Sets The Record Straight On Drug Testing

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the heated drug-testing controversy which threatens to derail the proposed fight between top pound-for-pound boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao on March 13, 2010, in Las Vegas. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

In a lengthy interview recorded Sunday evening, we discuss why it is "the right thing" for the regulatory bodies of sports like boxing and mixed martial arts to adopt the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency and have random pre-fight blood testing of all fighters for widely-used banned and dangerous substances, including EPO and human growth hormone. Thus far, the Mayweather camp has insisted on such testing, while the Pacquiao camp has vehemently opposed that.

Dr. Goodman explains why the current testing procedures used by the various athletic commissions are "behind the times" and must be changed.

We discuss how the controversy around the proposed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is further killing and discrediting boxing, and why the motivations of the Mayweather camp in bringing this issue to the fore are far less important than the need for such testing to protect the health and safety of the fighters.

This interview provides scientifically-based information and analysis that most of the media either does not or will not dare discuss, but it is all right here for you on No Holds Barred.

Dr Goodmans have a brain and why Hes not doing in commission

Dr Goodmans have a brain But why Hes not doing in commission way in his time. Let the commission do their jobs. Let them change the testing rules not on just Manny v Floyd. Manny wont do the test because not yet mandate in the commissions. If already their then theres no problem Pac will do the test. If Floyd is serious on this testing style then he should have ask that to the commission beforehand, maybe on his fight with Marquez. He is asking that just for Manny that means he know the only advantage he could in this fight is to have Manny blood tested in the near fight. He know Manny will be weak if the blood is taken to hiim. Big brain bad moves

When Manny has bled all over the canvas in previous fights, nobody mentioned he was weak or losing too much blood during the fights.

There's a reason why some people are called pioneers in life. They take an idea that is usually under the nose of everybody, and presents it to the world. The world calls him a genius for bringing to light something they hadn't noticed all along.

Maybe this is the right time to bring attention to the random drug testing issue and influence those who are willing to make changes to the current protocols.

What better occasion to make the subject popular than under the spotlight of potentially the richest fight in the history of the sport?

        If not now, when?

Pac is not vehemently opposed to the testing. He said he will abide by whatever the NASC thinks best.

Dr. Goodman was right on all about things, what he failed to mention was the gold standard testing for EPO was urine. She mentioned about blood testing which can accurately measure Hematocrit and Hemoglobin and an abnormally elevated would suggest some is using EPO but that's indirect test in which she acknowledge. People who trained in high altitude can have that result. The definite test is urine test.

She also was right on blood doping but if Pac agreed to a blood test right after the fight than a flow cytometry test would catch that.

I believe the issue here is Random drug testing will more effectively expose drug users than the current protocols in place today.

              Dr. Goodman agrees.

Random drug testing without cutoff dates is what Team Pacquiao is opposed to.

She's off to an unprofessional start by generalizing
                    that ALL athletes use HGH.

I can't argue with her angle on hematocrit checks vs.
blood-doping, but 1) that's about 10 ml per test, quite
apart from what they need for other PED screening, &
                    2) Haters will still suspect Manny whatever the result:
the baselines will be established in January, if ever. If
Manny's blood count is slightly high, it's anyone's claim
whether it's naturally high or boosted, and all that the
random testing will tell is whether Manny's hematocrit
                    will change from his baseline.

Same goes for a lot (but not all) PEDs tested for, and
there will be questions about how low USADA's own
thresholds are, whe testing for substances that do
occur naturally in the human body.

Floyd's pain-numbing cocaine may get a pass, despite
the advantages conferred on him; while Manny's more
exotic diet items, however natural or traditional, might
get him a red flag. Hopefully, USADA is 100% free of
"red-flag" connections to either GBP/Ellerbe or Arum,
otherwise they'll be under suspicion for bias when they
form a panel of protocols and thresholds for the match.

No testing protocol is going to be 100% effective
without impacting the boxers' ability to fight.

A compromise is inevitable: a reasonable degree of
testing coverage versus ensuring fighters are 100%
                    on fight night.

If a compromise is not made, then one party didn't
really want the fight, and the out-of-the-blue
issue was designed to scuttle the match.
