    Ring Belts-are a paper belt-ask Michael Spinks

Great....the thread didnt go through since not enough tags.

    Will try again more briefly.

Spinks refused to fight Mike Tyson in 1987 and was stripped of his IBF belt, Ring magazine didnt do the same to spinks as he ducked tyson to fight Gerry Cooney. This is while Tyson was WBA, WBC champ and was trying to be undisputed. Eventually, Tyson beat Tucker to get the IBF which was vacated by Spinks who prefered losing his title than fighting like a man to keep it. Ring's lineal belt is never stripped by people who duck its just lost in the ring or vacated. This is why i consider only the 4 major sanctioning bodies to be real belts.

When Spinks put his prestigous RIng belt up against Tyson he was KOD in 91 seconds. The great lineal champ looked more like a paper champ. Anyway, why should RIng strip titles for ducking? Afterall, isnt ducking expected from paper champions?

This is a ****** argument. The Ring doesn't strip fighters because belts should be won and lost in the ring. The WBA and others are absolute ****. Even now.

Spinks beat Holmes, the legit heavyweight champion. He then became the heavyweight champion and that's how it happened. Spinks was the champ, like it or not.

So if you duck people than the belt has great credibility? Spinks ducked Tyson and got his rear end handed to him 90 seconds. Spinks lost his IBF belt by refusing to fight tyson but the Ring belt stayed in his waist. Even Pavlik decided to man up and fight to avoid getting stripped.

You are not even old enough to truly understand how dominate and powerful Spinks was at 175. Jones would actually be the weaker guy at 175 against Spinks. Prime RJJ and Michael Spinks would be an absolute pick em war at 175.

Throw Archie Moore and Michael Moorer into the 175 mix and you have a classic 4 man tourney.

The Ring belt may be paper but you can't just buy it by paying off some sanctioning body official. It is not availible to the highest bidder.

Spinks was a good LHW and is a hall of famer on his work on that division. I dont think he will have beaten jones at LHW. His wins against Holmes were debated, especially the second fight SD.

Pavlik fought garbage ass Gary Lockett to keep his belt, not Mike Tyson. If you're gonna duck a fighter, then that's your choice. You shouldn't necessarily get stripped because of it.

The sanctioning bodies have stripped actually legitimate champions because they refused to fight their terrible mandatory.

I agree that there is alot of BS politics in all sanctioning bodies. Its up to the fighters if they want to fight their mandatory or not. Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns had the same issue. He wanted to fight Hearns but had a mandatory defense with Mustafo Hamsho- a guy he already beat; but fought him again due to the mandatory defense and than fought Hearns.

But there are often cases when getting stripped is legit. Bowe ducked Lewis and he got stripped of a belt, Lewis ducked Ruiz and lost a belt, same i think happened to Foreman once.

I do like the RIng part that they dont have any sanctioning fees but they dont have the resonsibilities that a true organization has.

But the RIng Ratings system has been opened to scandal. The one back in 1976 almost crippled that publication when they got caught faking and elevating rankings for TV Rights and even their Ring Record Book had ficticious records. They were exposed with Don King and got kickbacks. So for Ring to say we made a belt to counter the corruption of the other bodies is like the Pot calling the kettle black.
