    Steroids Fiasco Manifests Mayweather's Legacy

    Steroids fiasco manifests Mayweather's legacy

December 29, 5:49 PMIndianapolis Fight Sports ExaminerDennis "dSource" Guillermo

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is definitely one of the best boxers of our time. You can't take anything away from the things he has accomplished thus far in his career.

Unfortunately, unless he decides to change his ways, he will also go down as one of the most talented fighters who didn't give fight fans the fights that the want and would've highlighted his career.

Think about it. When Floyd Mayweather Jr. retires, what will the world remember him for? He was a great defensive boxer. He was a technician. In terms of defining fights though, what will people associate with him? I guess you can say Corrales, but is that Hall of Fame type stuff?
Who can forget Muhammad Ali's classic fights with George Foreman and Joe Frazier? How about Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera's trilogy? Hagler-Hearns, Duran-Leonard, Hagler-Leonard, Pacquiao-Marquez, Pacquiao-Morales, Pacquiao-Cotto, Mosley-Margarito, Vasquez-Marquez... And the list goes on.

Mayweather has none of that. And now with an opportunity of lacing it up against the sport's biggest star in Manny Pacquiao, instead of just signing on the dotted like and doing the fight, he has done what he has been doing every time he refuses to fight the biggest challenge around him that the world wants to see- and that is to work his mouth instead of his fists. Instead of Mayweather-Pacquiao, he aims to give you Mayweather-Hatton- again! Only this time around, he will be facing Ricky Hatton's #33 ranked welterweight brother Matthew. So instead of fighting the #1 ranked guy, he goes down the list and wants to fight #33. I wonder if "in the spirit of fairness" Money would have Matthew go through an Olympic-style drug testing too.

This will be his lasting legacy. One of the most talented boxers, who chose to conduct his fiercest battle with his mouth, instead of his fists. He'd rather argue and talk about his greatness, than let his hands do the talking in the ring against the best.

What is an undefeated record if he never really tested himself against Cotto, Pacquiao, Margarito, Mosley, Williams and all the big names that were available to him throughout his career? He's like the 2007-08 New England Patriots who went undefeated the whole season but refuses to play in the Superbowl and insist he is the greatest because he has yet to suffer a loss. What is an undefeated record compared to being a true champion? Even the Charlotte Bobcats can go 40-0 if all they had to play are D-League teams.

The Ironies of Pacquiao and Mayweather in poetry (Click 2 read)
A poetic take on the striking polar differences between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

Just lace them up for once Floyd. Let's say you really think Pacquiao is on some PEDs, but at least fight someone legit if you don't want to fight him. But see, I have been hard from you from the beginning because I know what you are really trying to do. I called your bluff from the second you said you agreed to fight Pacquiao. How can that possibly be true when I got info from people inside your circle saying you were already training with Roger as early as the last week of November for a possible fight in Europe, then all of a sudden after a couple of days you release another PRESS RELEASE saying you have "agreed" to fight Pacquiao?

This is the problem with Mayweather's career in my honest opinion- there's too much talking, controversy and excuses. If you think about him as one of the greats, it doesn't instantly sit in. There's always "ifs", "buts", "what ifs" and all that. Only his fans can really be comfortable with thinking he had a great career. Objective boxing fans agree he has the skills but he never tested it. He plays it safe- that's not how the greatest fighters carve their names. It's a legacy that will be described and defined the way it was made... through a lot of talking. But as Money himself said, "legacy don't pay the bills".

And people wonder why boxing is dying... The same people who caused it's decline with over-hyped boring fights (The World Awaits- Dela Hoya-Mayweather) are the same people discrediting the man who has brought back excitement in boxing through his fists. It's a shame really... It's a damn shame.

Food for thought: If Team Mayweather and GBP really wanted to get a deal done, why did they come out with a "PRESS RELEASE". Note how Mayweather has been quiet himself and all his statements are made through press releases written by the staff writers of GBP. Here, click these links (LINK #1 dated 12/2 / LINK #2 dated 12/10 / LINK #3 dated 12/17 / LINK #4 dated 12/17) and review how I've been calling this turn of events from day one. Mayweather never wanted to fight Pacquiao in March. It's all just smoke. This whole steroids thing against Pacquiao is not about fairness, it's a propaganda. If Mayweather is all about fairness, why didn't he honor the 144 weight he agreed to fight Marquez in? Like I said, all the answers are in the links I posted. This is nothing but a publicity stunt to keep Floyd name significant so he can sell a fight in Europe against the other Hatton. I think it's cheap, but since a lot of people fell for it, then I guess it's "Money".

That article was pretty biased but it did have some good points. Mayweather camp had to have known that releasing that statement about the blood test would jeopardize the fight.

Not only did they know, their plan is to create doubt and speculation in the Pacman's abilities to have become the "Greatest Fighter" of this generation. The Mayweather's "Smear Campaign" is a vicious attack on a respectable and talented man who's dedication to this sport is commendable.
