Earnie might be a nice guy these days, but that doesn`t mean he was a great boxer back than...

He had nothing except a big punch!

And I completely disagree with his call on LL... LL in his prime shape could`ve defeated ANY HW in history!

Other than that it`s a nice article to read!

That's the first time I've heard Earnie Shavers described as "cuddly"

Shavers was more than a punch the problem was he fought in an era with some of the best heavyweights to ever lace up the gloves holmes, ali, foreman, and some fighters who lacked skill made up for it with heart I don't see any of the present heavies that would have beaten him. I think he would have decapitated vladimir without stewart in his corner and crushed him because of his weak chin and poor technique. Shavers displayed an ability to slip shots and position himself to counter explosively and it only took one punch from him to end it all, you had to be a very good mover to offset that, as ali and holmes were, todays top heavies like arreola would have been steamrolled in my opinion, earnie had devastating power, and decent defense when he wanted to used it, and a champions heart but he did suffer from stamina problems, but I think the 12 rd fights of today would have suited him much better.

Earnie (Dee as we called him) is my cousin. I called him my uncle cause he was my dad's age. The crazy thing is, his brother Alvin probably hit harder than him! But he just couldn't stay out of trouble in the streets. Ended up getting shot. I like how this article showed how him and Ali were friends. When I was a kid I met a lot of the great fighters, Ali & Holmes to name a few. They were all cool, yet boxed each other. Nice article.

its funny, i just watched Facing Ali, and was fascinated with Shavers. Then,. i read an article on Dog house boxing about him, now this....he's got a great story, his actual resume is pretty stunning....he should be hall of fame, surely
