Not to go all “Cool Hand Luke” on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao situation, which is decidedly SNAFU, but either there is a failure to communicate or Richie Rich Schaefer, the Mayweather rep, is a liar.
What follows is the only Important statement the Golden Boy front man made in speaking to ESPN’s Dan Rafael today (Saturday). In this one paragraph, Schaefer makes it sound (although Rafael did not co-sign the idea) as though it’s a simple matter of agreeing to a prefight blood and urine test cutoff date and, voila, the bout contracts for March 13 will be signed forthwith meaning right away and pronto.
If you care about this mega bout happening in March or anytime in your lifetime, you must carefully parse each word here:
"What we're saying, and what is important to us, is four things -- that the tests be random, that they include blood and urine and the time frame, meaning when do you stop the tests before the fight but know they will still be effective. Three of them we have agreed on -- random, blood and urine. So now it is a matter of the two sides working out the specifics of the cutoff date to assure it will still be effective."
Here's the whole ESPN story.
In one conversation with vacationing in Baja California Bob Arum Saturday night, I did not hear the head of Top Rank, Manny’s main negotiator, say anything approaching this.
But, just to be sure my hearing is not dimming or that I misunderstood Uncle Bob, I rang him back a few minutes ago to read this paragraph from ESPN.com verbatim.

Is, I asked Arum, the only thing standing between making and breaking the Big Fight a matter of agreeing to a blood and urine prefight test cutoff date for Pacman?
No, no, a thousand times no, shrieked the 78 year old promoter.
“Schaefer is making it up,” Arum said without hesitation.
“It is not true, it is just not true. He is making this up now because he looks bad. He is making this up because he is trying to justify it to Mayweather. Let’s see if he can justify it to Mayweather why this fight is now dead.”
To be clear, I am not calling Schaefer a liar.
But, whether he is lying or just sadly mistaken, Mayweather versus Pacquiao is headed for the coroner’s office unless the Mayweather camp makes a 180 degree revolution in its current stance.
Somebody’s lying or somebody’s sadly mistaken.
Oh, and SNAFU?
Situation normal, all fouled up.
Feel free to use another “f” word if you must.
