Let me preface this by saying I'm a big fan of Pacquiao. He is one of the few fighters who I will gladly pay to watch on PPV. And I hope he KOs Money Mayweather if the big fight ever goes ahead. But I think Pacquiao should man up and do the tests. Given what's at stake here, this is not such an unreasonable demand from Mayweather's camp.
My take on this is Mayweather has a huge amount of respect for the fighting abilities of Pacquiao. He knows this is the man who is more than capable of destroying his treasured unbeaten record in one of the biggest fights today's generation will ever witness. If he loses his unbeaten legacy so be it. The money is off the charts, and it's a risk worth taking for that reason alone. But he wants to know the guy who beat him did it fairly, without any PEDs, with proper testing from start to finish.
Sure you can test Pacquiao after the event. But if that happens after Mayweather has lost, there is going to be a lifetime of conspiracy theories and Money's unbeaten record will be a point of dispute. There's also a point of contention that after a rigorous 12 round battle PEDs may not show up in the blood test.
It's sad it has to come to this I agree. But every sport has shown that when there are incentives for people to cheat, many weak athletes have taken the easy option and done so.
I think this kind of testing should become the normal. It probably would open a big can of worms that the sport wants to try to avoid (as other sports did in the past when they resisted it). A rigorous drug testing policy will be good for the sport of boxing in the end.
So Manny should agree to the tests and then beat the hell out of Mayweather in the ring afterwards.
