Juanma Lopez said yesterday that not having to sacrifice to make 122 pounds has him traning ibetter than ever for his upcoming bout against WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano.
"I feel much better at this weight," he said yesterday Juanma, who will challenge Luevano on Jan. 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Yesterday in the pre-weight in supervised by the Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico (Cbppr), Lopez weighted 139 pounds, well below the 144.9 pounds (15% above the agreed weight) recommended by the Cbppr one month before the fight.
"I had breakfast, lunch and look at the weight we gave," said the undefeated southpaw puncher soon after getting off the Romans.
The weighing was held in the fitness area Jose "Cheo" Aponte, in Caguas, where Juanma trains daily under the supervision of his handler , Orlando Pineiro, and his coach, Alex Caraballo.
"If I had to do 122 pounds for this fight, I'd be in a diet," said Lopez, who said he was fully recovered from his newly sprained right ankle.
"The ankle got infected but it's okay," the champion of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) at 122 pounds. "We're starting to run again. It will not be problem in the fight. "
Lopez said the four extra pounds that he will have for the fight againstLuevano's WBO featherweight title have helped him work again incorporate weights to his workout.
"I feel stronger," he said of his first training for a fight in the featherweight division.
"Those four pounds Juanma will help enormously, and you'll see in the fight," in turn, Pineiro.
But that does not mean it will stay long in the 126 pounds, said the veteran coach, who has been linked to the career of Juanma since the charismatic left-hander started in the amateur.
