KELLY PAVLIK WANTS PAUL WILLIAMS ASAP
By G. Leon
"We're not giving up our terms of the fight last time, but if they want to fight, just sign the contract right now and let's set the date and get it done!"
GL: Cong**** on your victory, can you give us some thoughts on Kelly's performance? "Thanks for the compliment. I think a little bit of the rust did show, but overall I thought Kelly fought well. I would have probably rather seen him box a little bit, but a fighter is a fighter and he wanted to go out there and get in some good hard work and I thought overall he did a pretty good job."
GL: When you say the rust showed up is that a reference to how many times Espino was able to land early?
Jack Loew: "You got to look at this, even when Williams fought, when two fighters are in there ****ing on each other, your chin is exposed and I think when it gets into that mode, it's a matter of who is bigger and stronger and who can take better punches. That's one way Kelly fights and it proved to be a good way to fight this kid, but did I want to see him taking those early shots? Absolutely not."
GL: Is that the best display we've seen of Kelly's uppercut?
JL: "It was close to it. We saw that from the very beginning with Espino when we were watching films on him. He leans way above his knees and Kelly did a very good job of throwing it that night."
GL: What are you hoping is next?
JL: "We got to get right back in the gym. He lost a lot on his strength and on his physical condition with the reaction he had to the medicine. I think we get right back in the gym after the Holidays and get his strength back up and then we'd love to fight Paul Williams if we can. Paul Williams, Felix Sturm. Somebody with a name at 160. We're comfortable here and we're not going to be moving up top 168. They could bring people up to us. Bring up Margarito or Angulo, or bring somebody down to us, but we're staying at 160 right now."
GL: There's a belief that Kelly has failed to capitalize on his title winning effort over Taylor. This is based on the non-descript opposition Kelly has defended his belts against. Obviously the game plan seems to be that 2010 is the year Pavlik cleans up middleweight, correct?
JL: "2010 has to be that year. We're here to fight the best at middleweight right now and we want all the big names, at middleweight. Everybody wants to fight Kelly, but they either want us to come up a weight class or two. We're comfortable where we are and we're staying here. Kelly will fight anybody, come to 160. We're the middleweight champ and this is where we're staying."
GL: With all of the hoopla surrounding the Williams pullouts, are you hoping Williams is next?
JL: "Absolutely and Kelly feels the same way. We're not giving up our terms of the fight last time, but if they want to fight, just sign the contract right now and let's set the date and get it done!"
GL: Closing thoughts?
JL: "I think you're going to see alot more concentrated and focused Kelly Pavlik in 2010 than you've ever seen before."
