Comments Thread For: Kelly Pavlik’s New Beginning in The Sport He Loves

By Thomas Gerbasi - Last year, while doing a press junket for the David Mamet film Redbelt, Ray Mancini was steered away from talk about the movie business into a discussion about the trade where he first made his name as a world lightweight champion and matinee idol back in the 80’s. In particular, ‘Boom Boom’ was asked about any advice he had given the latest sensation from his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, current middleweight king Kelly Pavlik.

Mancini recalled a banquet in 2007 celebrating the city’s new favorite son and the words he spoke to him and the assembled guests.

“I want to remind you of that contract you signed,” said Mancini to Pavlik, one champion to another. “The people you signed it with are all out here. When you turned pro, that contract simply read, ‘if you back me and support me, I’ll go out there and represent you the best possible way, and I’ll represent you the best way I can.’ Now that you’re the champion, you don’t get to break that contract; only they get to break that contract. So go out there and be an upstanding citizen, be the role model that you’ve been and that you’ll continue to be, and live a righteous life, not only for yourself, but for the people of Youngstown. You now represent this town and you’re the voice of this town.” [Click Here To Read More]

There's no such thing as a "New Beginning" for Kelly Pavlik until he switches trainers.

pavlik is the definition of a old fashion puncher, thats it thats all he has, if a fighter can take his punch he loses, if a fighter can avoid his punch he loses

Pavlik is a drunk skinned head Mo FO, who needs to switch trainers ASAP.

He still beat a couple of top guys, but he needs to stop drinking and e serious aout boxing!

so youre saying that the only person that pavlik has lost to is the only one who could avoid him or take his power was B hop? then how to you explain pavlik woopin on taylor who beat hopkins twice? or how about edison miranda? i know his resume isnt jam packed with top shelf opposition but he is still young and as far as you saying all he is, is a old fashion puncher? come on while his style does suggest that its not all he is you dont get to the world class level if you are a one dimensional fighter

Really? You still think after Martinez that he could beat Pavlik who hits a **** load harder than Martinez and PWill with his rigid style is so easy to hit. Plays right into Pavlik's gameplan.

Pavlik is dumb white trash for spewing this nonsense about "having to take this fight to avoid being stripped." Any fighter with a brain in his position would rather be stripped of a silly alphabet title than have their reputation take such a big hit. He'd still be The Ring champ either way, it just proves he was really avoiding Williams

The "Skin head' and "dumb white trash" comments are just ****ed. Knock it off with that ****. But as far as Kelly goes, I have a bad feeling that his days at the top are done. I hope Im wrong but I think he is mentally beaten at this point and isnt going to get any better. I wouldnt be suprised if he lost one of his next fights and fell off hard.
