Introducing Freddie Roach's Top Prospect, Jose Benavidez!

    Hi Boxing Scene readers,

My name is Ryan Maquiñana, and I'm a boxing writer based in Northern California. I just started my career with an article on M a x B o x i n g about Freddie Roach's new pupil, 17-year-old phenom Jose Benavidez, Jr. from Phoenix, Arizona. You can see it on the front page now.

Right now he's the subject of a bidding war between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions even though he hasn't even made his professional debut! Maybe the fact that Roach said he sparred "dead even" with Amir Khan and later, Timothy Bradley says something about how special this kid might be one day. Roach even went as far to say that Jose is his "best prospect at Wild Card."

The best part of all is that Jose Jr. is very humble, and in speaking with him and his father, I learned that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Anyway, I hope you check out the article below if you have time, and if you can please leave any comments you might have. I'd love to hear what you guys think. Thanks!

    Sincerely,
    Ryan Maquiñana

He was the youngest kid ever to win the National GGs at 141 (age 16).

His father told me in the article that the 2012 Olympics was their original plan but politics within USA Boxing changed their mind.

Check out my article on the front page of M a x B o x i n g to read more about it.

we already have that other thread up about him sparring with Porter and a couple of vids. Here's what I wrote in that thread:

Its there for him if he wants it. If he's as good as he looks then he could be the next Oscar, seriously. He has that type of look, personality, fighting ability, and he will be consigned by guys like Roach, Pac, Naz, and Khan who will make people want to see him

I dunno about this kid. its too soon to tell. I mean he doesnt have natural speed, power or slickness. Amir has spectacular speed, Manny speed and power, and Floyd has slickness. What natural gift does Jose have?

Better not let him near the mayweathers. At his tender age, he will be easily led to a ***********al way of life
