Bernard Hopkins works for rival promoter but sees Pacquiao excitement as something very special
CHICAGO—Hall Of Fame fighter Bernard Hopkins is a vice president of Golden Boy Promotions which is currently representing Floyd Mayweather Jr.

But BHop holds his tongue for no man on subject and you don’t have to pry words out of his mouth when it comes to Manny Pacquiao.
He turns into Bubbly Bernard when it comes to rapping about the Pinoy Idol and I thoroughly enjoyed a long conversation about Pacman and other fistic subjects with the legendary and quintessential “Philadelphia fighter” at the ESPN Zone restaurant just off the Magnificent Mile area of Michigan Avenue.

Hopkins was in the city handling GBP duties related to the Paulie Malignaggi-Juan Diaz HBO televised rematch Saturday night at the University of Illinois, Chicago, campus.

Hopkins, already thick in heavy discussions to travel to Australia for a possible $6 million bout against new Down Under ring idol and Roy Jones conqueror Danny Green, does not label Pacman unbeatable.
But he does make it sound like any opponent, including the undefeated Mayweather, may have to walk through hell wearing a gasoline suit, to stop the surging Megamanny.

"This guy is fighting for a cause, for his whole nation,” Hopkins said. “I love that, I love to see that. He’s got all those millions and millions of Filipinos on his back.”

Hopkins said it is stimulating how Pacman has delivered the goods for the country which shows him such heavy love so far.

“He’s like a baseball player but not just any baseball player. He’s like the clutch guy, the player who has get up in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two men out. The bases are loaded and he’s the last man standing. His team is losing by three runs.

“And he knows that and he knows what must be done. It’s big drama,” Hopkins said. “He’s the guy who gets it done.

“He doesn’t just hit a home run, he hits grand slam home run, clearing all the bases. He makes the difference and his team wins.”

If nothing else tells you how Pacquiao’s amazing ride, his wild wave of success, has brought a jolt of badly needed electricity to the formerly slumping sport of boxing, then listen in on BHop when someone mentions Manny.

The mention of Pacman’s name turns him into Bubby Bernard.

Now that’s righteous respect from another craftsman.
