The 80's is a decade because it is 10 years. 2000-2009 is a decade but it's not the start and end of an official decade.

wrong, 1 ad is one year after death or after the birth of christ or whatever... one whole year, however what do we call the time inbetween the birth of christ and 1 ad ... that is the first year, 1 ad is the second

a better example is take a football match ... if a goal is scored at 0:35 .. that is classed as the first minute, 3:37 would be the 4th minute... not the third because 3 whole minutes have already passed, 1 ad is the 2nd year beacause a whole 12 month have already passed beforehand
