im watching it right now,
this is the first time i really get to
learn about emile in deepth,
what do you guys think about it??
he really does not look like a
fairy to me.
I thought it was pretty good, a little exploitive though-- especially when the camera's were there for Griffith and the Kid's son first meeting. Also I was not a huge fan of the veiled insinuations that he actually was gay without having the respect to ask him directly...

Yeah, all bs aside, whether or not he was gay has no bearing on his greatness as a fighter as it's quite undeniable. He WAS an all timer, for sure. Even though it's invoked on nearly every site I've ever logged on and frequently here, it's really not a joking matter. Seriously, it's not like anyone has a choice as far as their sexuality.
There's a nice article I read on another site that really goes into detail about his life, his career, the circumstances surrounding his fights with Paret and their relationship as well as the years since then and Griffith's struggle to understand and come to grips with his own sexuality. IF he was gay or bisexual, coming from his cultural foundation, it would be an issue for him especially being in a major sport like boxing where it would seriously and did ostracize him from many of his peers, earning potential via endorsements and fans.
The thing I read in SI was interesting in regards to Goldstein. It said that he was almost "too good for his own good" in that he knew he had been criticized for stopping fights too soon, and knew that Peret had a big chin and had a tendency to play possom. Now I don't know if I buy this as justification (or if it is even my place to ask for justification) but I thought it sheds another interesting view point on the situation...
