  • Cotto meets Abdullaev in lobby!

    Wednesday, April 20 2005

Muhammad Abdullaev hit New York City, checked in at the hotel front desk, told fight reporters his Olympic gold medal is "framed real nice and hanging like a picture at my home," and said after he beats Miguel Cotto on June 11 the battle plan is to step it up and take on Zab Judah and Kostya Tszyu. "Cotto is better - moves a lot quicker - but I'm the one who beat him at the Olympic Games," Abdullaev said, taking a fighter's stance and shaking his fists as a crowd formed around him. Then, Miguel Cotto came into the hotel lobby and walked straight to Abdullaev. Cotto stuck out a hand and then embraced the Olympic gold medal winner - the last man to defeat him. "Welcome to New York City," said Cotto, with a quick smile. Cotto, world junior welterweight champion, will defend his title against Abdullaev in a scorching main event at Madison Square Garden on June 11. It's a revenge fight for Cotto, who lost to Abdullaev in the first round of the 2000 Olympic Games in Australia. "Getting this guy back into the ring is something I've wanted for a long time," Cotto said. Cotto and Abdullaev will be at a Thursday, 11 am press conference at Madison Square Garden in New York City to officially announce the fight. Also attending will be former world champion Joel Casamayor who will take on lightweight sensation Kid Diamond of Las Vegas. Cotto worked out hard Thursday in New York, hitting a heavy bag, speed bag and shaking out in the ring at the Trinity Boxing Club at 110 Greenwich St.

Cotto has really been better at pro, and I think he'll pull this one out in a very competitive fight. His body work will be the difference.

I met Cotto in Las Vegas at tha Pacquiao Morales fight

He was there with his wife and kids.

Is his wife fine? Does she have those nice round hips?

Is Abdullaev any good? I never seen him.
Is Cotto ever going to give Corley another shot?
Will Abdullaev do a better job than Corley did?

She's alright, but kind of plain.

He seems very family oriented. He was chasing his kid around the lobby of the MGM Grand, and the back pack he's wearing was full of diaper gear.

But Cotto was really aproachable and chatted a bit. Nice guy.

Yes,he has good power and is well schooled. His win over Cotto in the amatuers just makes him more dangerous as Cotto next opponent.

No,Corley will always be too small for Cotto.Chop Chop should be fighting at 135,not 140.That said,Cotto probably knows that fighting Corley would be a waste of time, because if he wins than it was expected.

Yes,if Cotto gets hurt like he did against Corley,Abdulaev will finish him.Although,Abdulaev decisioning Cotto looks like a better possibily IMO.

I pick Cotto by mid-round stoppage.Abdulaev is a capable opponent but he hasn't fought anyone near as good as Cotto at the Pro level.

keep in mind that Abdulleuv (whatever) is basically a undefeated fighter...he was dominating Emanuel Clottey and got caught and could have gotten up at the count of 1 if he wanted...if he understood english he still would be undefeated.

My question in this fight is not about Muhhamad's skils (they are every bit as good as Cotto's) rather the size difference. Cotto is feasting off guys that are not even close to the same size as he is and he will most likely continue to feast until he once and for all grows out of the jr. welter class.

This is going to be a very good fight and won that Cotto is certainly the favorite based on size but it would not surprise me in the least if MA comes out and wins a decision.

Too me this is Cotto's toughest test so far and anyone thinking that MA is another Kelson Pinto has got too tune in!

I think this is going to be a great fight for Cotto. Exactly what boxing needs.
