  • Comments Thread For: Amir Khan's Race Card Talk Should Stop, Says Gallagher

Outspoken Denton-based trainer Joe Gallagher, who guided Matthew Macklin to victory in Ireland last weekend, has hit out at Amir Khan’s claim that ‘I know if I were a white English fighter, I would be a superstar in Britain and the world’ by declaring that the WBA light-welterweight champion is bringing race into sport. People have to remember that he was probably led to say that by the journo and let's be fair he was probably right. I was at the Prizefighter and he was there and he was booed and I thought 'the boys just won the world title, whats these prick's problem'. I think a small part of it is racial and I'd like to think in 2009 we shouldn't be having the race conversation any more. It's not like he's Carl Froch and he's bad mouthing everyone.

How bout they stop writing articles about khan he hasn't done **** except win a tittle and now wants to vacate if they make him fight maidana. He needs to fight sum body young and power full to prove he's good and stop trying to get fighters who are past their prime like barrera and haton and Marquez

Maybe people were not happy about all the bull**** Amir and Frank Warren were coming out with, he was talking about possible opponents in fighters like Pacman, Hatton etc. and he's gettin knocked down Michael Gomez and getting knocked the **** out by a unknown colombian who it now turns out is wank.

naseem hamed probably made more money in britain than calzaghe did fighting in britain.

the race thing has no merit imo.

if you do good and is entertaining to the fans you'll get support.

khan needs to not alienate his british fans and just fight. the fan support will come the more he wins and the more entertaining his fights.

he's been on british ppv and making pretty good money. can't expect any more unless your name is ricky hatton and trying to get the support ricky got is just not realistic.

I don't recall Khan coming out after the Gomez fight and saying 'I want to fight Hatton' so I'm baffled by that comment, that talk has only happened since he won the belt and no-one can doubt that since the Prescott fight he's a completely different fighter and would stop probably Hatton. Please remember that I said I think a 'small' part of it was racial, the rest were either like yourselves or just plain haters for the sake of hating. Also let's remember that Naseem Hameds days were pre 9/11 and pre 7/7 tube attacks and to say it has no merit is naive at best. But I respect your opinions as I hate it when people pull the race card.

i agree that there is some element of race involved in khan's status and popularity. it goes all ways though. white fighters don't get credit for their athleticism. mexican fighters don't get credit for their overall skill because theyre expected to be puncher-brawlers. on and on. but let's not forget, the kid is 22, hasn't beaten anyone of notice besides an old barrera, just jumped weight classes and won an alphabet belt, defended the belt against a nobody, its not like he's storming through any one division. is he talented? without a doubt YES. does he have the big name trainer? YES. has he proven himself? absolutely not. when was the last time a 22 year old was a superstar? oh yeah, MIKE TYSON. khan needs to prove himself and still has dues to pay. so he thinks he's a superstar? prove it! take on bradley, alexander, urango, peterson, maidana, hell even malignaggi. even then that's not enough. right or wrong, personality goes a long way, ie hamed and mayweather.
