Sure, the fact Maidana is a hard hitter and Khan's chin is weak is one of the reasons.
But the main reason is that Maidana isn't American. How many Americans would tune in to watch two foreign guys ( who don't have the biggest rep ) fight?
If Khan wants to break into America, fighting an American would be better. It's more marketable, which is what Warren's aiming for. In fact, Warren is hesitant of Khan going to America so soon. He probably wants him to attract a larger UK audience first.
I guess Warren will either;
A) Have Khan face some more European/UK/Faded legends, to raise his profile.
-or-
B) Go straight for the winner of Diaz/Malignaggi or big named fighter in another division.
Personally I'd like to see him fight Malignaggi. Malignaggi doesn't pose any serious threats, but technically he could give Khan a lot of problems.
If you're looking at the bigger picture, who is Maidana? He's just some guy who exposed Ortiz, who's Ortiz? Just another guy who was a prospect. Maidana also has a loss to Kotelnik. Who was beaten earlier by Khan.
Triangle theories don't work in boxing.
But fighting a guy like Maidana, who's only known for beating Ortiz - isn't worth the risk.
Khan's got ambitions and won't be kept back like Calzaghe. Khan doesn't need Maidana, it'll do nothing for him in terms of reputation or promotion.
