Comments Thread For: Jose Luis Castillo Says The Motivation is Still There

Former junior welterweight champion Jose Luis Castillo says the motivation to become a major player at 140-pounds is still there. Castillo is still fighting at welterweight but wants to move back down for a final title run. He is one of the names being mentioned to face Miguel Cotto next June.

He should face Cotto. He'd take a serious beating but good money to retire on.

Castillo fighting 5 times in 2009(though against bums) is a good indication that he's motivated, wants to stay active and stay in shape and continue to build confidence for 1 last run at a title. All the luck to him. I'm sure he can compete with the top 10 JWW's.

The motivation may very well still be there. But that dosen't hide the fact he past his prime as a fighter and I feel dosen't have the tools to compete with the elite especailly at 140.

Although he is coming off four straight wins, this dosent say much due to the oppotision he was beating. All were Journyman fighters and all fights were held in Mexico.

Castillio has had a long hard career. He has now been Pro 19 years and fought in over 10 World Title Fights.

In his prime do, Castillio was a force to be recokned with. He learnt his trade sparring the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. Like the majority of Mexican fighters, he didn't have the greatest of starts. Here is a insight to his early days what he had to say about them....

Jose was born in Empalme, Mexico, and grew up in a family with four brothers and four sisters...he said, "My father used to be a professional fighter, but he worked a lot of years on the railroad. He never gave up his job at the railroad. He used to take us to all the boxing, whether he fought or not, and I really enjoyed the sport. I thought it was fun. There was always boxing gloves around the house, so it was just natural for me to step into it.

"I used to go to my dad's fights when I was about seven or eight years old. I used to get up in ring between fights and do my workout right there, my shadowboxing, and people would throw money at me. I liked that part. I was 12 years old when I started fighting as an amateur, and I had 33 amateur fights. I was 30-3. I was 25-0 before somebody beat me.

"They were looking for me to go up and join the national team in Mexico City. I was there for 15 days, and I didn't like the way they trained people, the way they were doing things. I just left and turned pro. I have no regrets whatsoever about turning pro at 16."...

He was a tremndous pressure fighter, with a great boby attack and technical ability. He was good enough to become a two time WBC Lightweight Champion.

In his first reign he made 3 defences of the title.

Losing it in a razor thin decision to unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr, in a fight which most thought he deserved.

After losing the rematch to Mayweather. He won the vacant crown from a peak Juan Lazcano. He would make two defences of that title which included wins over Joel Casamayor and Julio Diaz.

Then in argubaly the most exciting fight of the era. He lost the title to Diego Corrales getting stopped in the tenth. After this fight he was never quite the same.

Weight making was also playing a factor in slowing him down. He knocked out Diego Corrales in a rematch, were he failed to make the 135lb limt.

Since then he has had mixed form. Most feel he got a gift when beating the unbeaten Herman Ngoudjo to set up his fight with Ricky Hatton.

Hatton then stopped him in 4 one sided rounds with a body shot. Castillio in the fight looked old, worn out and washed up, and made Hatton look better than he actually was.

Since this he has also lost to medicore Argie Sebastian Andres Lujan. And his only wins have come against Journyman caliber fighters.

He will most likely get another big fight due to his name and his mini run of form. Miguel Cotto has been mentioned as a possible next opponenet for him.
