When it comes to Manny Pacquiao, former world lightweight champion Juan Diaz is convinced. Diaz is one top level Mexican boxer who refuses to pick against the Pinoy Idol.
Asked Sunday night on “Boxing Truth Podcast” hosted by Ricardo Lois and John Chavez who he would pick to win the huge March 13 showdown between Pacman and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Diaz said the Miguel Cotto changed his Manny mindset.
“Before that fight with Cotto I would have picked Floyd,” college graduate and Mexican American Diaz said. “I would have picked Mayweather hands down until I saw what Pacquiao did against Cotto.
“I could break down Manny and Floyd all kinds of ways, going over all sorts of things but Manny he showed me something against Cotto.”
Houston resident Diaz, who has a rematch in Chicago (HBO) this Saturday night against Paulie Malignaggi, said he will sit on the sidelines as far as picking a Mayweather-Pacquiao winner.
“This time, with Manny, I’m going to watch it and hope it’s a good fight.”
Diaz said he is happy that the rematch with Malignaggi is at a neutral site.
“I don’t pick the judges,” Diaz said. “I didn’t pick the city for this fight. Everything is going to be neutral.”
In fact, Diaz said, not fighting in hometown Houston may be beneficial for him.
Diaz also mentioned that he still itches for a rematch with Pacman nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez.
“From here on out, I don’t care where I fight. They said I fought in Houston because judges there would be scoring my way. That’s not the case. I’ll fight where I need to fight.”
