Is 2009 the year of the dodgy judge? It certainly seems that way. Poor judging has changed the outcome of fights and made a mockery of the sport. Let us now turn our attention to the very judges who ruin a good fight with their shameful scorecards.
Nominations:
Pierre Benoist has earned his rightful place in the judging hall of shame with a ludicrous 119-110 scorecard in the fight between Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez.
Gale van Hoy from the Juan Diaz v Paulie Malignaggi fight. This moron scored a close bout 118-110 to Diaz in a fight that Malignaggi predicted he would be screwed over in.
Alan Davis: After Ali Funeka dishes out a beating to Joan Guzman, this judge has the gall to score the bout a draw, robbing Funeka of righful victory.
Benoit Roussel in a masterful display of judging incompetence also robs Ali Funeka of victory by scoring that same fight 114-114.
Mike Fitzgerald in his debut as a boxing judge scored a fight 116-112 to Vincente Escobedo. Fortunately the other judges had more sense to score it favorably for Katsidis in a deserved win.
Honourable mentions also go to these judges:
Massimo Barrovecchio raised eyebrows by gifting Froch a 115-112 advantage over Andre Dirrell in a close fight that Dirrell won comfortably by at least 2 rounds.
Daniel Van de Wiele as above.
