Comments Thread For: Fernando Vargas Hires Mayweather Sr. as Trainer

His first fight back would probably be a 168-175lb bout. I don't ever see him anywhere near 154lbs or even 160lbs.Comment

this is going to be like hatton and mayweather snr all over again.
vargas should hire a conditioning coach first to get in some sort of shape and then look to hire a trainer.Comment

First off am fairly quite shocked that Vargas is defiantley coming out of retirement and second of he has hired Floyd Mayweather Sr as his trainer. A pretty starnge combination to say the least.
I don't know if it's a good move. Vargas has put on a tremndous amount of weight in the time he has been retired and dosent' look like he has went near a gym in that time. In his last performance against the faded Ricardo Mayorga, he looked washed up, and out of shape, and his punch resistance looked dredfull.
Even though he is only still 31 years of age, he is a young man, but a old fighter. He has been boxing from a extremley young age, had a huge amature pedigree and a hard Pro career, which included some grulling fights, at such a young age.
I feel he won't be able to compete on the top level no more. It will also be interesting to see what weight he fights at. Because if he chooses 168, the weight at which he last fought at. I feel he would be risking his health.
I can imagine he will fight Hector Camacho Jr, a fighter who is past his prime and dosen't take the sport as serious as he should. It goes to show you, how serious he takes his career by fighting and calling out washed up fighters that were in there peak 10+ years ago.
So Vargas has a good chance at beating him, but that dosent say much. In his last fight Camacho Jr just about beat washed up Journyman Yori Boy Campus on a SD.
At his peak do, Vargas was a sensation. He was a incredible amature. Winning the Won the 132-lb Junior Olympics Box-Offs, Junior Olympics International tournament, 1995 Pan American Games Bronze Medal, and represeneted 1996 U.S. Olympic Team, going out in the second round, on a questionable decision to Marian Simion.
He was the youngest ever 154lb champion winning the Title from 74 fight veteran Yori Boy Campus at the age of 21 years and 5 months.
He defended that Title 5 times. Including wins over the likes of Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, and Raul Marquez.
But he them met the 38-0 Felix Trinidad. In a highly anticapted unifaction fight, Trinidad took something deep out of Vargas that he was never able to recover from.
In the most exciting fight in 154lb History Trinidad stopped Varags in 12 brutal rounds, but he didn't have it all his own way. Vargas would drop Tito and win a majority of the rounds, before being knocked out in the 12th.
Vargas was never the same. But he was still good enough to capture another world title and defeat the likes of Wilfredo Rivera and Javier Castillejo, but would go on to suffer KO defeats to arch enemy Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosely.
Vargas is credited with being one of the most exciting and entertaining fighters of this era and had a never say die attitude.Comment

Vargas was here for the Camacho Jr./Campas fight and challenged Camacho. The thing is that he looked like he weighed well passed 200 lbs. I weigh 240 and took a picture with him and looked pretty even. He could fight Arreola in L.A., that'll sell some tickets!Comment
