Manuel Perez: Well, it looks like the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight is going to have to wait a little while longer before it takes place. Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, is talking about Pacquiao fighting one bout before the Mayweather bout against World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman, so that Pacquiao can get the opportunity to win his 8th world title.
I can’t understand the preoccupation with capturing titles when the fighters that Pacquiao is winning them against are less than impressive. Pacquiao needs to forget about fighting for another one of these alphabet titles and focus on something that really matters, giving a rematch to Juan Manuel Marquez. Why is Pacquiao so hesitant to fight Marquez again? Pacquiao has fought Marquez twice so far.
The first fight was a 12 round draw and the second fight ended up with Pacquiao winning a 12 round split decision. If you ask boxing experts who they think won the fight, probably most of them will say Marquez. The win over Marquez accounts for one of the seven titles that Pacquiao has won. I’m sorry, but that win is tainted as far as I’m concerned.
So if Pacquiao is interested in fighting Foreman, it will be for his 7th title, not his 8th title. I don’t count the win over Marquez. It’s funny though that Pacquiao would be willing to waste one of the last couple of fights of his boxing career to go after a paper title. What is he going to do with it pin it on his chest like a medal? Who cares about titles if they’re not won against the very best fighters.
Foreman is decent, but I wouldn’t call him the best in the light middleweight division. If Pacquiao wants to go after a title, let him fight Paul Williams at light middleweight and lets see how well he does. You did notice that Roach and Pacquiao didn’t mention Williams’ name, didn’t you? Williams would beat Pacquiao like a bad habit if they fought. And so will Marquez if given the chance.
Pacquiao already took the easy route by fighting recently beaten Miguel Cotto instead of Shane Mosley or Paul Williams at middleweight, even though Cotto had been beaten only a two fights before that by Antonio Margarito. Before that, Pacquiao fought Ricky Hatton. Okay, so why fight Hatton when he was knocked out by Mayweather Jr. in 2007?
As bad as Marquez made Pacquiao look in their two fights, I guess I can see why Pacquiao doesn’t want to fight him again. It’s safer to fight fighters like Foreman, Cotto and Hatton, I suppose
