Genius not required to make Mayweather-Pacquaio deal

Let’s go green, let’s save some poor, innocent trees from being turned into wasted newsprint. Let’s save some bandwith online while we’re at it.

Please, I beg of you, no more stories about the brilliance that it will take for Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer to get the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight into contract form so both of the superstars can put pen to paper and we know the mega fight is on.

I’m not saying that Uncle Bob, on top of the boxing heap for 40 years, is any kind of dummy or that former Swiss banker Schaefer is not intelligent, either.

But two reasonably smart high schoolers could make this match happen.

But only two terms must be negotiated to make Mayweather-Pacquiao reality.

One, and the most difficult obviously, is how to split up the jackpot.

Two, is the date and I don’t think Pacman’s political plans will make him defer cutting up the biggest jackpot in boxing history.

The usual nitpicking issues—ring size, brand of gloves and the like—are nonstarters.

The venue will be Las Vegas, forget about Jerry World, the Cowboys fancy stadium in Arlington. Vegas can’t afford, at a time when the casinos are still on the ropes, let this one slip through its greedy grasp.

The ring will be the standard 20 foot inside ring. Nevada permits each boxer to pick what brand of gloves he will wear.

HBO has issues its marching orders. HBO is the company that pays the do-re-mi for the lesser fight shows offered by Top Rank and Golden Boy.

Golden Boy is, in essence, an HBO subsidiary and it also behooves Arum to deliver what HBO wants which is The Big One.

Only a moron on either or both sides of the negotiating table could fumble this one.

While Arum and Schaefer have been called many things, moron is not among them.

Schaefer—and keep this in mind—has a Golden hand in Manny’s pocket due to that out of court contract settlement at the same time he is “the representative” of Mayweather Promotions.

The question must be asked why Mayweather Promotions goes outside its own tent to hire an outside promoter and why it can’t handle its own business.

Does anyone in their right mind see Top Rank hiring Lou DiBella or Dan Goossen to go make this deal?

The fight will get made and made soon.

And then we’ll hear the first person narratives of both Arum and Schaefer about how tough a deal it was to make, about all the high hurdles they had to jump over.

Those tales will be poppy**** mixed with balderdash.

But many of the stenographers masquerading as reporters in boxing will duly record and present same for your amusement.

I’m telling you here and now we should save the trees and the bandwith.
