    1. Represented the US in the Olympics
    2. Hyped by the media before even turning pro
    3. Good looks ( Brings the women fans )
    4. Mexican American support
    5. A Great fighter in his own right.

      See Anna Kournikova

Nothing else needs to be said about De La Hoya, his tennis counterpart was much like him. Good looking, a good fighter who received more recognition for his looks and that's about it.

And, I just don't get it where people come off with De La Hoya being well-spoken, lmao. Have y'all heard the man talk? He's a dud in interviews.

I think y'all are taking his "careful with what he says & says what the public wants to hear" for being articulate.

I do give credit to De La Joto for making the right decisions in his life. He has surrounded himself with the right people.

i would compare him more with david beckham to be honest.

if it wasnt for her looks kournikova would have never had any kind of recognition. oscar was a great fighter in his own right.

Pffft, C'mon man. do you know how many great fighters you're insulting ?

De La Hoya was a great ticket-seller, hell, it didn't even take any effort on his part, he just had to fix his hair, wear a nice suit, and put in a lackluster performance in all his biggest PPVs !!

            In my opinion:
*First of all he had a nice story: Young guy, who came from a tough neighborhood went to the Olympics, won the Gold medal and dedicated his medal to his deceased mother.

            *Articulated.

*Every woman in the planet found him attractive, something rare in boxing.

            *Speaks english and spanish.

*He has Mexican roots, and Mexico is well known for producing great boxers.

            *Good boy imageolite, always smiling.

its the fact that he fought the best fighters and he looked like the man so...i think if everybody didnt have the illegal box back then the tito oscar fight would have had 5million ppv buys and no other fights would have come even close to approaching that

Stars are born, not made. Oscar is in the same league as Denzel Washington, David Lee Roth, Brad Pitt, Paul Mccartney, Michael Jordan, ect. In addition to their talent, they all have the looks and charisma to go with it.

and I mean, c'mon, who did jump out of their seat when he KOd Vargas!?

I doubt anyone will ever be as big as a draw as Oscar.

His popularity certainly wasn't due to his boxing ability.

**** everybody in my crib went buttwild when he dropped that pretender Vargas! Oscar made us all proud that day, and when everybody thought Oscar was done, that he wasn't a fighter anymore, he showed heart in that fight, and found a way to win even though he was overmatched in size and power.
