Seriously How Can You Stop That Fight?

I was on youtube the other night and came accross the Taylor-Chavez fight. I didnt rewatch the fight but I just went to the end. How in the world are you a supposed top notch ref and stop that fight? I just dont get it. The knock down was bad and Taylor was down for a second but popped right up. How can you as a ref have all of those fights under your belt and just be completely unaware of the situation. Even if you are worried 110% about a man's safety, you still have to know that this is the 12th round, you still had to know that he hadnt been down at any other time in the fight, and you still had to know that the round had already been going on for over 2min, even if you didnt know the exact amount of time that was left. You know that the round had already been going on for awhile so there cant be much time left. He probably knows that Taylor is also winning and even if you think Chavez is doing alot better than others do and is hitting Taylor with those "bone crushing shots", its still close enough where Taylor could win if he just makes it to the end. There is no way you stop that fight. No way, no how.

What makes me mad is how serious Steele was looking in the face. Again, I understand all that about the safety or whatever but you dont have to stare all up in Taylors face. Just count to 8 and let him go because you know its almost over. If Chavez manages to drop him again, then you can "think" about stopping it but not off the 1st one, even if he has taking a beating. I never beleveive in conspiracy talk but that is one time where I could see something crooked happening where he may have been on Kings payroll or something. All of that is with me cutting Steele slack. Without me cutting him slack I would say that he has to be a pro and see the red light flashing behind Taylor to signal only 10seconds left. How can you not notice that? Again though, I could tell by the look on Steele's face that even if he had saw that light, he still wouldve stopped it. Its like he made it all about himself. You have to take the situation in hand and know whats going on. You cant do that at that time. You just cant.

On a side note though, what was that idiot Lou Duva doing standing on the ring? Thats what made Taylor look sideways at him when Steele was asking him a question. No one talks about this but if you look in the background at Chavez, he starts like celebrating even before Steele stopped it because when he saw Duva, he thought that meant he himself was stopping the fight. What are you up on the ring for, idiot? That didnt make no sense. He lost it right there himself. If he's not there then Taylor never looks that way and stays focused on Steele to where the fight probably wouldve continued

Taylor was ruined after that fight... Ref should have stopped it earlier.

The rematch was pretty meaningless. Taylor wasn't worth much after Terry Norris beat him.

I always have alot to say and I took computer/typing/keyboard classes in school so I can type like a million words in a minute. Thats why I always write long stuff but it only takes me a second to do it

Are you implying Taylor was damaged goods going into the first Chavez fight?

I actually think it was disgusting that Steele did that. That was Meldricks career defining fight and he was robbed of it.

It wasn't Norris it was Chavez who ruined him. If you have a good boxing eye you can even tell by looking at boxrex ^^ I've watched the fights and noticed a big big difference.

He had 26 fights when he fought Chavez, in his defense he was seen as a good young fighter.

Meldrick's welterweight title win over Aaron 'Superman' Davis was one of his best performances outside of the JC Chavez I and Buddy McGirt fights.

Most welterweights were simply too big for him and he could no longer make 140. Taking the Terry Norris fight was just another "brilliant" move by Duva along with him distracting Taylor when Steele was asking Meldrick whether he was able to continue or not.
