Sturm a Replacement for Nard Perhaps.

Proposed Hopkins-Taylor Fight Falls Apart Says DiBella and Hopkins E-mail this to a friend Printable version

    By Rick Reeno

Bernard Hopkins has until today to sign for the July 16th clash with undefeated middleweight star Jermain Taylor or the fight is off. DiBella told Arkansas ********-Gazette writer Chris Givens that he is giving Hopkins until the end of the day to call him and set the fight

DiBella told the paper that an offer has already been made to Felix Sturm to take the place of Hopkins as Jermain's next opponent, but said that it is very unlikely that Sturm will agree to the fight. The likely opponents that will clash with Jermain in July are Sam Soliman or fringe title holder Maselino Masoe.

"He’s a lunatic fighter that changed his mind. If I don’t get a phone call today that the crazy man has come to his senses, we’re moving on to another fight and will announce Jermain’s next fight soon. I’m not going to let this nut Bernard Hopkins wreck Jermain’s career." said Lou DiBella.

The main issue of why the deal has fallen apart is a dispute over the financial terms of the rematch clause. DiBella and Hopkins promoter Golden Boy have twice agreed to the terms and twice Bernard Hopkins changed his mind on the terms. Hopkins spoke about the fight negotations on ESPN and said that the Taylor camp is to blame for the fight not becoming a reality.

"They want to put the blame on Bernard Hopkins but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Do I need Jermain Taylor or does he need Bernard Hopkins? I am the undisputed champion and he can’t change that unless he beats me. I don’t need him. But I am giving him an opportunity to whip my a**. That’s the best I can do. If he don’t want that opportunity, that’s not my fault." said Hopkins to ESPN

"Twice I made deals with Richard Schaefer and twice Bernard changed his mind. At this point we’re not going to answer to Hopkins’ marching orders. He is the most unpromotable fighter in modern boxing history, and I should know because I was his promoter once. He just doesn’t want to fight Jermain Taylor. We still want the fight so if something happens today, I’ll sign it. That being said, I’m not optimistic and by tomorrow I’m on another agenda." said DiBella to Givens

I took Rick's arcticle off the main page and figured it was worth discussing. Mainly for the interest of one of our members in general. Please read the highlighted area. As if it is news to anyone, it was on the front page.

Unlikely, it seems he would enter the contest. Yet I feel Felix might give Taylor some trouble. He is physically strong, and has a very good jab.

Sturm has a great jab, is strong and seems to have a solid chin, but he has no power and that will be his doom in any upcoming big fight (vs. Hopkins or Taylor)...

only reason power will hurt sturm is cause he wont KO them and get robbed from the judges imo, he can outbox these dudes.

Felix Sturm is a fighter who might be starting to grow on the general public as far as popularity goes. It is rare, for a fighter from Europe to get the respect he deserves, especially in the United States. He is a lenghty 6 footer, like Taylor. Jermaine might arguably be as strong as Sturm, but I think his boxing skills are inferior in comparison. Felix looked impressive, by demolishing Cherifi, and say what you will about his power punching. It is not that bad IMO. He picks and chooses his spots in the ring, and does not always have the aggressive gameplan that most fight fans would like to see. That is not to say, that he is no threat to hurt these people. He is an extremely game fighter, I still think a (work in progress). It is quite hard to argue with his ranking as the #1 middleweight in the world, and yet seems to be a non-favorite as far as sanctioning bodies go.

He is an extremely intelligent fighter, who distances himself well with the jab. He proved that, by beating DLH in their fight, where he was robbed. It will be tough for a fighter to simply outclass him, when he fights like that. The only area I think Taylor could expose, would be his lateral movement in the ring. Taylor is the gifted athlete, yet by no means physically superior to Felix. That walking monolith style would give most middleweights problems. He is technical, well schooled, and has the personality of someone who realizes his status in the middleweight division.

I do not see how he would be scared to fight anyone, especially Jermaine Taylor. Sturm wants his spot on stage, just like Taylor has been recieving for the past 2 years. If these two fight, I think Sturm will give Taylor more problems than one would think at the outset. That is for sure.

Yes. I am beginning to like him more as a fighter, ever since I watched the DLH fight again a few days back. I have said derogatory things about him in the past, yet they were unwarranted. I will cease to underrate him, especially while he is ranked the number one middleweight in the world.

Taylor looked impressive against an outgunned William Joppy in his outing against him. He exploited his size and reach advantage over him, which was the tell tale factor in the fight. Taylor can not do this to Felix. He does not have the clear physical advantage. I would also find it hard to think Taylor's ring intelligence surpasses Sturm's. That would be ludacris.

Maybe you can enlighten us as to why Taylor is a superior fighter. You can start by comparing the level of competition they have faced. Instead, I suppose you will be sticking with your usual ridiculous 1 or 2 liners.

Obviously he is superior because in his last fight he scored a fantastic KO. And Bernard Hopkins got a boring decision. That is the only thing that matters when evaluating good boxers.

Why is Dibela saying he's not going to let Hopkins ruin Jermain's career. How in the world can not fighting him ruin his career?
