Correct. All statistics, including Compubox numbers, can be deceiving.
Allow me to use a very extreme example to make a point; further, I’ll use the two fighters in question. Let’s say Castillo scores 100 blows to Floyd’s 0 in the first round. Clearly, Jose Luis wins the round. But, let’s say Castillo gets hurt and only lands 15 punches in each round for the remaining eleven rounds; Mayweather scores 20 punches for each of the same rounds. The final Compubox stats would be: JLC 265 punches landed, PBF 220 punches landed. If you were handed a sheet with just the raw Compubox numbers, and didn’t see the fight for yourself, you might be made to believe that Castillo should have won the fight. However, all things being equal, Floyd would have won 11 of 12 rounds and would therefore be rightfully declared the winner. That’s how boxing matches are won, by the score tally of the rounds, not how many cumulative punches were landed.
All that being said, I thought Jose Luis Castillo won the first fight with Mayweather. lol I just happened to watch that bout on Youtube last night. Some of the rounds were tough to score, and I thought it was fairly close. What got me were some of the judges’ scores. I mean, please…it was one thing to score that fight for Floyd, but to score it such a lopsided victory? You won’t hear a peep from me when someone says Castillo was robbed.
