PUERTORICAN BOXING: We are having a bad time, but we got faith

As the economic crisis facing the country, Puerto Rican boxing is going through a difficult spell.

We have played several defeats in a row of some Puerto Rican champions. The most recent were last weekend, when they lost their belts Miguel Cotto and Daniel Santos.

Of these things that have happened, the important thing is to learn to take things seriously and always try to give the utmost in the fight.

But like the economy, boxing one goes up and down. Puerto Rico has gone through this in the past when we had many champions calendar and started falling. We do not surrender, we again have faith and stand up, to having seven champions again.

While we do our best to keep the champions, that we still have three major agencies, we have faith that there are young people who can give us the victories we need to have as many champions in the past.

Perhaps many of them will have to wait a while, but at least the next few years there are two that might be knocking on doors of a world championship.

One is Mario Santiago, who finished in a tie against Steven Luevano last year to contest the belt featherweight WBC. You 21-1-1 record with 14 knockouts.

Another is Cesar Seda, Jr., who come from winning the flyweight title International Boxing Organization.

Both should be fighting for the world championship of one of the leading organizations in the next year.

And, well, we also expect to see the triumphant return of Miguel Cotto. In the past, Cotto has been in this situation, after the fight against Antonio Margarito.

We have faith that set up again and take the right decisions, against whom and when, to be crowned world champion again.

There will be more titlists in the near future, but what we lack is a strong champion who will unify a division and rule it for some time, then go up in weight and keep winning titles. In other words, we don't have a Gomez or a Trinidad right now or perhaps a pure boxer with the ability to do so like Camacho or Benitez. Calderon is getting old and will retire soon, Santos seemed to be one to make noise but is getting old also, and the Martinez guy has not shown anything impressive to me.

I think Lopez has the best chance of being the next dominant champion from Puerto Rico. He's young and still learning but his talent is undeniable and the people like his attitude, so he is viewed as the next Trinidad in terms of love from the fanbase.

I would definitely like to see Carlos Quintana bounce back and get a title. I think he's been overlooked but right now he's the best pure boxer we have and he could do some good things if he commits to it.
