I think this thread bring somehing interesting about the marketing of boxing. If you notice NOBODY says it is United States vs Philippines, why?
Because Bob Arum is a thug and that is how he markets his fights. But when it is Cotto or Marquez than its Philippines vs Puerto Rico or Mexico.
Because it is good marketing to feed on ethnic rivalries. Carlos Ortiz beat Flash Elorde twice and he loved the philippines. When Juan Manuel Lopez beat Penalosa in Puerto Rico the puerto rican fans still gave Penalosa an ovation for effort. The weeks before the Cotto vs Pac fight, some very disgusting things were exchanged on Youtube between ethnic fans. This is all dumb to me. Because it is a sporting event not a war.

Yes i will root for Mayweather as i was born and raised in the US. But it dosent mean i have any hatred toward Pac or pinoy people.

I really dont think that anyone needs to root for anyone strictly because they are from the same country as you. I like to watch Mayweather fight but I really can't stand him otherwise. But we do have more fighters besides him to root for like Mosley(my favorite), Berto, Campbell, Williams, Hop, Jones, Dawson etc.....

Thats one of boxings best rivalries. As a promoter, its his job to play up that angle. If he didn't, he wouldn't be in the position hes in today.

I rooted for Gatti {born in Italy} all the time.

I've also rooted for Roy Jones Jr. {Krypton} over American fighters.
